Every day, at-risk children in America travel a path from truancy to
delinquency to full-on involvement in the juvenile justice system. Their
involvement makes them more likely to commit more serious offenses later
in life.
That is why we need programs that offer these youths the opportunity to repair the harm they caused and get the help they need, which cuts the odds that they will re-offend and move on to the adult criminal justice system.
American Humane's Restorative Justice for Youth program is the perfect example of this. When youth understand how their actions affect others,
they are less likely to repeat their offenses. Young offenders are encouraged to accept responsibility for their crimes and must take an
active role in repairing the damage their crime has created. Victims are empowered to voice the impacts of crime, their current needs and to resolve their feelings toward the crime and communities can enjoy a lower crime rate and safer neighborhoods.

Incarceration is not a solution, it is in itself a bigger problem. We need creative ways to support and guide children.

It would help more youths stay off the streets. There needs to be more programs, more things to keep youths interested and off the streets.

We have done work with, and are friends with a woman who coordinates restorative justice programs and the results have been wonderful. There's ample research to support the notion that current practices of incarceration fail society, and lots that would support healing approaches such as restorative justice, so let's get on with it.
