Keep Religion Free in Your Community

Target: United States Senate
Sponsored by: Defcon - Campaign to Defend the Constitution
The Establishment Clause in the Bill of Rights is supposed to keep our government from interfering with religion, guard against the states' use of religion for political purposes, and ensure that the government does not act in a way that prefers one religion over another, so that we may all worship freely.

But while the Establishment Clause protects our basic freedoms, it is not self-enforcing. If someone is forced to sue the government to protect their constitutional rights, justice and fairness dictate they be able to recover their legal fees expended to do so.

The Public Expression of Religion Act would prevent citizens from recovering their litigation costs if they sue to stop state-sponsored religion. This law is brazenly designed to make it next to impossible for private citizens to sue to protect their First Amendment rights because lawsuits are prohibitively expensive.

In other words, Congress and the Religious Right want to cement the establishment of their own religion as dominant via the force of the government, and the force of law.

Tell your Senators that religious freedom is more important than the agenda of the religious right!

I am writing to express my deep concern over the Public Expression of Religion Act (PERA) and to urge you to vote against this proposal should it come up for a vote.

Under the guise of "religious freedom," PERA seeks to undermine the Establishment Clause, weakening our nation's commitment to the separation of church and state and actually threatening the religious freedom of millions of Americans.

Currently, citizens who win lawsuits challenging infringements of the Establishment Clause - such as Ten Commandment displays on government property and prayer in public schools - are able to receive reimbursement for the legal fees they collect in the process. This ensures that all Americans are free to challenge legitimate threats to the freedoms promised in the Constitution - and that this fundamental right will be extended to all Americans, not just those with the financial means to fund a legal challenge.

By ending this reimbursement, PERA would deal a massive blow to our nation's enlightened commitment to the separation of church and state.

Please put the religious freedom of all Americans above the interests of the religious right, and vote NO on this proposal.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

Freedom of Religion does not = the right to make others practice the religion of the majority! America was founded by religious dissidents who wished to practice their faith without the state or majority forcing them to recant. Remember it wasn't just witches who were burned in Europe - Protestants were as well! Please don't let America become a less violent version of the Taliban merely with Chistian trappings. I really don't want the Dominionists to establish even this comparitivly mild stepping stone to bringing back Old Testament Law complete with stonings. If you think I engage in hyperbole please examine the work of TheorcracyWatch.org and decide for yourself.

"Freedom of Religion" means FREEDOM FOR ALL RELIGIONS! F@CK JAMES DOBSON AND THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT!!! Jesus said it best: "For I was hungry and you gave me no food; I was thirsty and you gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and you did not take me in, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then will he answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me." (Matthew 25:42-45) Contained within every evil(greedy profiteering republican) act are the seeds of its own destruction. Adhere to the teachings of Jesus, as contained in The Urantia Book, or else suffer the consequences. It IS that simple. TRUTH has been spoken to power, Peace will prevail. Buck Fush! SUPPORT GLOBAL PEACE AND ECONOMIC STABILITY, AS WELL AS ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY... IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY NOW!

Religious freedom is a must! People are being tortured, and killed in their right for religious freedom. And you want to take that away from American citizens!? God gave us the freedom of choice, and everyone has a right to religious freedom in each and every community!

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" That is the law in the bill of rights. There is NOTHING in the law that says 'Seperation of church and state' like you hear parroted everywhere. Think for yourself. Quit believing everything the media feeds you.

Please delete #15! The petition is only asking for one of the many kinds of respect for each other to be individual persons and fulfill themselves in their own ways as seems best to them. Actually I guess respect shouldn't be thought of as many kinds the way I began this comment -- that may be one of problems about peace. I think it is more accurate to believe and live as if RESPECT were "indivisable" (with liberty and justice for all!)! Yeah! And thanks, Aretha!

I do believe that it must be clear meanwhile to each and everyone how much bloodshed there was and still is because of religion. I personally do strongly believe that this must not be so. That we can all live in peace together (unless you would honor a God who seeks harm) if we agree to certain basic but peacebringing principles. The difficult bit I think is also in the courts. As far as I know the entire court system is based on the Christian belief, which I think is alright, but it must be seen to that people of another faith must not be discriminated for it in any way!

FREEDOM of RELIGION says it all. We all have the right to worship as we so choose. Isn't that what our country is supposed to be founded on? Freedom of speech and freedom from religious persecution?!

This is patently ridiculous. It is part and parcel of the legislative process. Freedom of Religion is a RIGHT not a PRIVILEGE.
