Keep Religion Free in Your Community

Target: United States Senate
Sponsored by: Defcon - Campaign to Defend the Constitution
The Establishment Clause in the Bill of Rights is supposed to keep our government from interfering with religion, guard against the states' use of religion for political purposes, and ensure that the government does not act in a way that prefers one religion over another, so that we may all worship freely.

But while the Establishment Clause protects our basic freedoms, it is not self-enforcing. If someone is forced to sue the government to protect their constitutional rights, justice and fairness dictate they be able to recover their legal fees expended to do so.

The Public Expression of Religion Act would prevent citizens from recovering their litigation costs if they sue to stop state-sponsored religion. This law is brazenly designed to make it next to impossible for private citizens to sue to protect their First Amendment rights because lawsuits are prohibitively expensive.

In other words, Congress and the Religious Right want to cement the establishment of their own religion as dominant via the force of the government, and the force of law.

Tell your Senators that religious freedom is more important than the agenda of the religious right!

I am writing to express my deep concern over the Public Expression of Religion Act (PERA) and to urge you to vote against this proposal should it come up for a vote.

Under the guise of "religious freedom," PERA seeks to undermine the Establishment Clause, weakening our nation's commitment to the separation of church and state and actually threatening the religious freedom of millions of Americans.

Currently, citizens who win lawsuits challenging infringements of the Establishment Clause - such as Ten Commandment displays on government property and prayer in public schools - are able to receive reimbursement for the legal fees they collect in the process. This ensures that all Americans are free to challenge legitimate threats to the freedoms promised in the Constitution - and that this fundamental right will be extended to all Americans, not just those with the financial means to fund a legal challenge.

By ending this reimbursement, PERA would deal a massive blow to our nation's enlightened commitment to the separation of church and state.

Please put the religious freedom of all Americans above the interests of the religious right, and vote NO on this proposal.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

Is there no end to this hipocrisy? Is there no end to bending the word of God to suit your agenda? Has greed taken over your lives the same way our government has become? And what WOULD Jesus do? I know God is going to have the final word on wether we qualify to join him in that mystical place on high. The path you've choosen by demanding religious mandate is just a little contrary to the lords teachings. I suggest you watch your step because the trap is set and the athiest government that is operating in this new century by hipocracy WILL fall, just as the Romans, the Greeks and a hundred other societies. Haven't you people realized that this world your trying to conqure won't be conqured. That's God's promise.

This country was founded primarily by those seeking religious freedom. However, everywhere we go one must swear under oath to "God," "We pledge allegiance to...one nation, under "God," Pagan wedding ceremonies are not recognized as legally binding, being a woman, my rights to choose how I live my life are currently in danger because some people believe my choices are unethical by their god, etc. I am tired of forfeiting my rights simply because of my religion. I'm standing up and finally demanding that Paganism (just as Christianity) be recognized as a religion in the United States.

Religion is Sacrisanct. NO civil authority, should any influence over anythings of a religious nature, not how a religion is practiced, not who practices a particular religion, no if a religion can or should be practiced. ALL THINGS connected with religion are outside the scope of any non-religious authority and it should remain so. Religious people are bound ONLY by their religious teachings and no other idea and no one outside of ANY religion should be able to tell a person of any religion how they should be in any way shape or form. Until that is the case, religious freedom will never be anything more than a carrot cangled in fromt of us that is ripped away at a moments notice from anyone that is unwilling to ignore their religious rights in favor of non-religious ideas.
