Help Wounded Soldier Adopt Military Dog

Target: George W. Bush, President of the United States
Sponsored by: American Humane Association
Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jamie Dana and her Working Military Dog Rex were inseparable companions. For three years they have lived together, worked together, and relied upon each other. Jamie and Rex work together to patrol checkpoints and scour buildings for hidden explosives, and have served together in Iraq and Pakistan.

On June 25th, 2005 Jamie and Rex were returning from patrol when a bomb detonated under their vehicle. Jamie was seriously injured, and in a coma. Doctors didn't expect her to live, and she had to be transported to the United States for medical treatment. It was only when she awoke she learned that Rex had sustained only minor wounds.

This is really a story about the bond of love that exists between Jamie and Rex. A bond so strong that her last thoughts before loosing consciousness was of Rex. A bond forged through training, through military service, and through companionship.

Jamie has returned to active duty, and wants to adopt Rex into her family. But current law prohibits the adoption of a combat dog until they reach retirement age. For Rex this could be another 5 to 10 years.

Please help re-unite Rex and Jamie - Urge President Bush to encourage legislation to override these laws.

Dear President Bush,

As a concerned constituent, I urge you to support legislation that will permit Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jamie Dana to adopt Military Working Dog Rex.

Sgt. Dana and Rex served our country together as a courageous military explosives detection team in Pakistan and Iraq, until they were both wounded while on duty near Baghdad on June 25, 2005. Sgt. Dana’s injuries were so serious that she was not expected to live. After many months of treatment, and while still recovering, Sgt. Dana is back on active Air Force duty in the United States. She has requested permission to adopt Rex so that they can be together permanently.

The Air Force agrees that this would be a fitting tribute to both Sgt. Dana and Rex. However, a current federal statute, Title 10, U.S. Code 2583, prohibits the adoption of a combat dog until he reaches retirement age. For Sgt. Dana and Rex, that would mean a minimum wait of five years.

Legislation proposed by Representatives John E. Peterson, (R)PA, and John Murtha, (D)PA, and Senator John Warner, (R)VA, would override Title 10, thereby allowing Sgt. Dana to adopt Rex. I urge you to support passage of this legislation, so these two heroes can continue their partnership for life. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Sgt. Dana and Rex should be reunited! They are both lucky to be survivors and that courageous dog should live out his life with Sgt, Dana. I want to see that we have learned how to treat canines after Vietnam and Katrina. So, please let her welcom Rex to her home. Sincerely, Gaye Gevitz

Please allow Sgt. Dana and Rex to help each other through their rough times associated with combat by allowing Sgt. Dana to adopt Rex now.

Allowing this team to remain together will demonstrate to the citizens of this country that bush might actually support the troops, instead of just using them as political backdrops and cannon fodder.

A millitary dog in Iraq has a very slim chance of living another year, let alone 5-10 years. Let Jaimie's family have him. The bond between them is so great it would be tragedy not to let them be together. He will not live to retirement age if this doesn't happen.

It's the least the goverment can do for Sgt. Dana and Rex, who have served their country. No more war for neither of them.

I believe fighting for her country and surviving a massive injury is worth allowing the adoption of this dog! Her last thoughts were of Rex as well as her first after waking from a coma. This dog has already been traumatized by the bombing now he's been removed from his companion. The bond of service are not exclusive to humans and so should not be denied to Sgt. Dana and Rex.

Rex's owner has become Sgt. Dana. Please allow Rex to be free with who he/she is comfortable with. To take Rex away from Sgt. Dana would be like seperating a child from a parent.

If not for purely humane reasons, perhaps it could be a very small thank you for time - and duty - served.

Because the dog has given his life to her and to his country. Surely this should be rewarded by being brought back to the country where he originated.

The bond between a person and a dog is very strong. So I believe that they both have served their country honorably, so the dog should stay with Sgt. Dana

The bond between a dog and the human he's accustomed to is very strong. It would be heartbreaking to separate them at this point, after all they have been through together. Please allow Seargant Dana to adopt Rex?

I'm really tired of all the red tape. Give this soldier a break. Isn't fighting for the country and getting wounded worth allowing the adoption of this dog? This dog has already been traumatized. Let them both be happy!
