Help Wounded Soldier Adopt Military Dog

Target: George W. Bush, President of the United States
Sponsored by: American Humane Association
Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jamie Dana and her Working Military Dog Rex were inseparable companions. For three years they have lived together, worked together, and relied upon each other. Jamie and Rex work together to patrol checkpoints and scour buildings for hidden explosives, and have served together in Iraq and Pakistan.

On June 25th, 2005 Jamie and Rex were returning from patrol when a bomb detonated under their vehicle. Jamie was seriously injured, and in a coma. Doctors didn't expect her to live, and she had to be transported to the United States for medical treatment. It was only when she awoke she learned that Rex had sustained only minor wounds.

This is really a story about the bond of love that exists between Jamie and Rex. A bond so strong that her last thoughts before loosing consciousness was of Rex. A bond forged through training, through military service, and through companionship.

Jamie has returned to active duty, and wants to adopt Rex into her family. But current law prohibits the adoption of a combat dog until they reach retirement age. For Rex this could be another 5 to 10 years.

Please help re-unite Rex and Jamie - Urge President Bush to encourage legislation to override these laws.

Dear President Bush,

As a concerned constituent, I urge you to support legislation that will permit Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jamie Dana to adopt Military Working Dog Rex.

Sgt. Dana and Rex served our country together as a courageous military explosives detection team in Pakistan and Iraq, until they were both wounded while on duty near Baghdad on June 25, 2005. Sgt. Dana’s injuries were so serious that she was not expected to live. After many months of treatment, and while still recovering, Sgt. Dana is back on active Air Force duty in the United States. She has requested permission to adopt Rex so that they can be together permanently.

The Air Force agrees that this would be a fitting tribute to both Sgt. Dana and Rex. However, a current federal statute, Title 10, U.S. Code 2583, prohibits the adoption of a combat dog until he reaches retirement age. For Sgt. Dana and Rex, that would mean a minimum wait of five years.

Legislation proposed by Representatives John E. Peterson, (R)PA, and John Murtha, (D)PA, and Senator John Warner, (R)VA, would override Title 10, thereby allowing Sgt. Dana to adopt Rex. I urge you to support passage of this legislation, so these two heroes can continue their partnership for life. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Please let these two remain together. Let the dog retire - he's been wounded, let him go home to Sgt. Dana and be treated like a king.

The bond between humans and animals should sometimes supercede ridiculous Federal Laws. This is one of those cases.

For the love of God, what else does this poor woman go through. She has a deep bond with this animal and they deserve to live their love together. A little justice and common sense would do a lot in this world!

C'mon G.W., you have a dog....don't you think they've been through enough and deserve a life together??

There is no reasonable reason that Sgt. Dana can't adopt the dog. If the dog was injured it will be of no use to the military. Not only that, but the military would have to house, feed and vet the dog for the next 5-10 years. Retire the dog and let him live out his life with love and comfort.

There is a special bond between a dog and its companion. They both were injured and need each other more than ever now.

She has a special bond with this dog and there is no reason the dog shouldn't be granted an "early retirement" in light of the outstanding contribution he's already made by saving her life.

Oh Please! Don't be so ridiculous. Let the Soldier adopt the dog. You foolish, foolish people.

Sgt. Dana should be allowed to adopt Rex for the same reason anyone should. Because they are both obviously connected to each other through their hearts. One takes care of the other and have become a fixture in their lives. It is a relationship that goes beyond the military(not that the military isn't important, please understand). With all the abuse done to animals,it would be injustice to seperate a companionship this wonderful. After all the trauma of war, they need each other.

A k-9 dog hurt on duty deserves to be able to retire to a good family. And who better then it's handler of 3 years.

Such a bond between a human and an animal can never be broken but why force them to endure the hardship of separation, haven't they suffered enough in the line of duty.

I can't believe we even have to have a petition for this. How silly. This woman and the dog should be together. The government needs to get a grip. I had a dog for 16 of the 22 years that she was alive and if you tried to get in between us, I would have taken your head off. Pets are therapeutic to people. These 2 have been thru allot together. They should be reunited.

They have been through so much together and are already family by heart & deed. I see no reason they should be kept apart. Please let them continue to be together. God Bless.

Politicians always profess that we should "support our troops". Well, allowing Sgt. Dana to adopt her combat dog by eliminating some government bureaucracy is a real. meaningful way to support this brave, injured, soldier who did more than her part to "support her country"!

With so many unwanted dogs in this country, it is niceto see someone wanting a dog because of love.

Bonds between humans and animals are as strong as those between human and human. I understand that Rex is expensive and has undergone extreme training, but Rex was hurt in the explosion as well and survived. As with any soldier, let him leave when he has been traumatized (like surviving an explosion). He served his country well and now it is time for him to serve Sgt. Dana.
