Help Wounded Soldier Adopt Military Dog

Target: George W. Bush, President of the United States
Sponsored by: American Humane Association
Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jamie Dana and her Working Military Dog Rex were inseparable companions. For three years they have lived together, worked together, and relied upon each other. Jamie and Rex work together to patrol checkpoints and scour buildings for hidden explosives, and have served together in Iraq and Pakistan.

On June 25th, 2005 Jamie and Rex were returning from patrol when a bomb detonated under their vehicle. Jamie was seriously injured, and in a coma. Doctors didn't expect her to live, and she had to be transported to the United States for medical treatment. It was only when she awoke she learned that Rex had sustained only minor wounds.

This is really a story about the bond of love that exists between Jamie and Rex. A bond so strong that her last thoughts before loosing consciousness was of Rex. A bond forged through training, through military service, and through companionship.

Jamie has returned to active duty, and wants to adopt Rex into her family. But current law prohibits the adoption of a combat dog until they reach retirement age. For Rex this could be another 5 to 10 years.

Please help re-unite Rex and Jamie - Urge President Bush to encourage legislation to override these laws.

Dear President Bush,

As a concerned constituent, I urge you to support legislation that will permit Air Force Tech. Sgt. Jamie Dana to adopt Military Working Dog Rex.

Sgt. Dana and Rex served our country together as a courageous military explosives detection team in Pakistan and Iraq, until they were both wounded while on duty near Baghdad on June 25, 2005. Sgt. Dana’s injuries were so serious that she was not expected to live. After many months of treatment, and while still recovering, Sgt. Dana is back on active Air Force duty in the United States. She has requested permission to adopt Rex so that they can be together permanently.

The Air Force agrees that this would be a fitting tribute to both Sgt. Dana and Rex. However, a current federal statute, Title 10, U.S. Code 2583, prohibits the adoption of a combat dog until he reaches retirement age. For Sgt. Dana and Rex, that would mean a minimum wait of five years.

Legislation proposed by Representatives John E. Peterson, (R)PA, and John Murtha, (D)PA, and Senator John Warner, (R)VA, would override Title 10, thereby allowing Sgt. Dana to adopt Rex. I urge you to support passage of this legislation, so these two heroes can continue their partnership for life. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Having to provide a "why?" here is an absurdity. The current administration considers the notion of "following the rules" to be conditional, and yet this rule regarding combat dogs must be adhered to, even allowing for the unique circumstances? Talk about your utter hypocrisy. Let Sgt. Dana adopt Rex and turn the page.

Both Sgt. Dana and Rex have been injured in active duty. They've done their jobs. Let them live together and enjoy life. They deserve it!!

I don't understand the problem. If Sgt. Dana is returning to duty why isn't Rex assigned to her? Personally, I think once a dog is assigned it should stay with the handler unless the handler dies. The bond these two formed is unlikely to happen with another handler. Are there records that prove the dogs are just as effective with a new partner? I think they both have earned the right to stay together and continue to serve together until the end. Then Sgt. Dana can adopt Rex.

Because Rex is family to Jamie. And family should be allowed to stay together

The love and respect bonding which pulled them through wartime and it's trauma,is still much needed for them both. Have a heart and do something right for the happiness of them both, they deserve it!!

Why would anyone ever want to prevent such an obvious humanitarian act & such a positive event for both human & animal? Surely you will not stand in the way.

She shouldn't be allowed to adopt the dog. We put alot of money and time into training both her and the K9. Unfortunately she isn't able to continue. However, her K9 can. This would be the same as if it was her best friend or boyfriend. Married coupels serve in war zones together but can't stay in the tent. So why should she be able to keep the k9. She knew the rules when she entered into the service and should follow them. If the dog was being retired it would be different

They have bonded like any soldiers do and should be together. There's plenty of other dogs that could take Rex's place.

She should NOT be allowed to keep Rex. As a fellow AF dog handler she is disgrace to the entire K-9 career field. Rex is a fully capable dog that needs to work with other handlers. She is being very greedy and thinks Rex's is her dog. Yes, it hurts to move on and leave a dog behind but thats what we do.

The strong emotional bonding that developed between soldier and dog during their time prior to Dana's injuries is indication that she whould be permitted to adopt Rex now that she has returned to duty. The policy of waiting forretirement for Rex should be waived considering these unusual circumstances.

Because it is THE RIGHT THING TO DO. I am tired of people acting like they don't know the difference inherently between right & wrong. You feel it in your gut. DO THE RIGHT THING. This dog belongs with Sgt Dana. Be POSITIVE. BE ON THE SIDE OF THE LIGHT. DO THE RIGHT THING.

It is shameful that you forced Rex into a battle that wasn't his to begin with and now you deny him the chance of a good life?! Consider the consequences of being so sure of your own importance and superiority. You disgust me...!
