Help American Humane Celebrate Their 130th Anniversary!

Sponsored by: Care2
On Oct. 9, American Humane celebrated an amazing 130 years of working to protect children and animals.

In 1894, the link between animal abuse and violence toward people was first mentioned at American Humane's annual convention. In 1940, they opened an office in Hollywood to prevent cruelty to animals in film and television, after a horse tragically fell from a cliff during the production of the film Jesse James. And in 1955, they published detailed guidelines on child protection standards and practices.

These are just a few of the early milestones that American Humane celebrated, and they continue to do great work for children and animals alike.

To celebrate with them, sign this petition and tell them how you will help further their mission of protecting animals and children. Here are some ideas:
  • Volunteer at a local animal shelter or children's organization,
  • Donate to American Humane,
  • Take action in your city and state on animal and children's issues, and
  • Learn more about protecting children and animals at www.americanhumane.org.
deadline: 10-29-2008
goal: 10,000

  • This holiday season, giving the gift of a donation to American Humane in a loved one's name,

  • Taking action in my city and state on animal and children's issues, and

I volunteer on a weekly basis at the IVHS/SPCA-Pomona. They are a wonderful group. We always fight for all the strays that come through those doors, and try to find them good homes. Unfortunately with the large number, there is only so much we can do. This unfortunately causes Euthanasia. So please spay or neuder your pets if you really love them! Anfd I ask that you please not look at the Humane Society as a slaughter house, but an organization that fights for these noble, beutiful creatures.

I have been a volunteer at a Humane Society for almost 5 years now and have adopted many old and abused animals and I am studying to be a teacher. I am always for portecting animals and children becuase someone has to advocate for those who can't advocate for themselves.

I have taken in several abused animals. At this time the city in which I live is trying to make me get rid of them. What will happen to these poor animals and do our cities really care about the animals at all!! I am in great distress over my loving animals- I have cared for them and nutured them. The city I live in could care less if they are rescue animals or not.

There should be harsh punishment for animal abuse. There are still states that will tell you "there is nothing we can do." People that abuse animals should have to register just like child abusers do. They should have to spend time in jail and pay large fines. NO "community work". It should be a known public thing what they have done. There should be no age limit on the punishment for animal abuse.

I have been rescuing horses about half of my life.I will continue to do so as long as I can. There are a lot of dog, cat, bird rescues but very few for horses. My family and I think that these beautiful animals are one piece of American history that needs to be preserved Also this is my first love.but when we get a dog or a cat it's all most always one that is going to go to a shelter.we donate to shelters when we can. and I think that everyone should step forward and help when they can.

I currently volunteer for a spay/neuter assistance program that helps low income families get their pets spayed/neutered. This keeps the animals healthier and means there might be a few less animals that have to be euthanized.

It is appalling what little regard we have for life at all much less our most precious resources children and our loyal friends animals. We react with horror and indignation when one of these children grow up to be a serial killer or an animal in the wild, who feels cornered by it’s perceived predator, attacks one of us first before we can hurt it, as it has been conditioned to fear us.

I donate money to the humane society and help any stray animal by taking it home till I find it's owner or find it a home myself or take it to the humane society to find one. I write letters to the editor of many newspapers on the cruelty of puppy mills and contact my representatives and senators and any other government employee that can help in the fight. I have contacted public personalities that I know are animal rights activists in the fight.
