Show the Candidates the Many Faces of Climate Change

Target: U.S. Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: 1Sky

The debate is over -- the National Academy of Sciences and thousands of scientists agree that the planet is warming. Now it's time to make the effects of global warming real for the presidential candidates.

Is global warming putting you and your community at risk for floods or hurricanes? Is it making water more scarce? Sign the petition, and let the presidential candidates know!

After a decade of stalling, we need real leadership on climate change:

  • Job creation in a clean energy economy.
  • A moratorium on building new coal-fired power plants.
  • The reduction of emissions levels in scale with what the science demands.

Tell the candidates what global warming means to your community and tell them to commit to be climate leaders in 2008 and beyond.

deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 25,000

Dear [Decision Maker]

The debate is over. The National Academy of Sciences and thousands of scientists worldwide agree that the planet is warming and that human dependence on fossil fuels such as coal and oil is the primary cause. If we do not act quickly and boldly, we will face irreversible and potentially devastating climate change impacts. There is still time to rise to the challenge, but America needs strong leadership to do so.

We need to:

* Create 5 million green jobs, conserving 20% of our energy by 2015.
* Freeze climate pollution levels now and cut at least 80% by 2050 and 25% by 2020.
* No new coal plants that emit global warming pollution. Invest in renewable energy.

I am in Utah, and this could mean ONE SERIOUS DROUT! I feel very bad for the rest of the world where typhoons, drouts & other disasters like floods are already happening. With today's technology, you'd think we coukd do better than fossil fuels.

We are a family of skiers, who often travel long distances to find snow, and are finding that old haunts are becoming less and less reliable. We also live in New York City, which is likely to experience more and more severe flooding as the world water level rises. Finally, we have two young children, who, I hope, will inherit a world that offers as much opportunity as it did for us, and is not beset by more wars, famine and unrest than we currently experience.

We are desperate for jobs, and many jobs are available with environmentalism. Who has more employees, the deep mine or the strip/mountaintop removal? The deep mine!

As a native of Pinellas County, Florida, I know that one summer we will get hit with the "Big One". Living a mile from the Gulf of Mexico, I realize that nature is ever changing. I have seen land formed and I have seen land stripped away by the forces of nature. Along the coast of Florida, there have been millions of dollars spent in beach re-nourishment projects. We have seen the fury of storms and yet, our coastline has become one long row of condos. Try buying homeowners insurance in a coastal area. More people are living in harms way of violent storms than ever before. These will be the same folks that will be the first to see water rising from the domino effect of global warming. The county of Pinellas, among so many others, is expected to be under water and I'm not sure it hasn't started already. Bringing in tons of sand to refill our beaches wasn't something I recall prior to twenty or so years ago. It is a costly and futile process that must be repeated. So, yes global warming has many impacts, and some are real close to home. If our present economy woes are something- the coastal communities of this country is where the land and home values are highest and the most populated. We will have people displaced, in the lower fifty states just as Alaska is currently facing. I wonder how many people that will be? What is the outlook? Our current government still hasn't lived up to responsibilities that grew out of Katrina. I fear natural disaster and anarchy and all that comes with it. I think it is time we declared the war on global warming with the same vigor as the war on terror. Mother Nature is fighting back, and has claimed many lives, homes, schools and lively hoods...It is time to make some changes and think outside of the box. What is the exit strategy for this one? How many more disasters upon humanity must we watch before we realize we need to retool how we deal with our environment, where our money is spent, where and how we live- making huge, complicated decisions that consider decision making for good and ethical reasons that will have a positive impact on the problems we face- no more lobbying, no more waste, a goal for sustainable living. I want an Earthship, do you? If you don't know what an Earthship is, then Google. They give me hope for a better future and a solution to many of our current crisis- from how to use old tires, to being totally off grid from water, sewage, electric with food grown right in your kitchen. What will this generations legacy be, will our descendants praise us for making a better world or curse us as they are entering the next "Dark Age"?

Simply our survival, our children's and grandchildren's - unless this problem is solved, there will be no future generations of either people or animals on this planet. We will truly have lost the Garden of Eden a second time.
