Show the Candidates the Many Faces of Climate Change

Target: U.S. Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: 1Sky

The debate is over -- the National Academy of Sciences and thousands of scientists agree that the planet is warming. Now it's time to make the effects of global warming real for the presidential candidates.

Is global warming putting you and your community at risk for floods or hurricanes? Is it making water more scarce? Sign the petition, and let the presidential candidates know!

After a decade of stalling, we need real leadership on climate change:

  • Job creation in a clean energy economy.
  • A moratorium on building new coal-fired power plants.
  • The reduction of emissions levels in scale with what the science demands.

Tell the candidates what global warming means to your community and tell them to commit to be climate leaders in 2008 and beyond.

deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 30,000

Dear [Decision Maker]

The debate is over. The National Academy of Sciences and thousands of scientists worldwide agree that the planet is warming and that human dependence on fossil fuels such as coal and oil is the primary cause. If we do not act quickly and boldly, we will face irreversible and potentially devastating climate change impacts. There is still time to rise to the challenge, but America needs strong leadership to do so.

We need to:

* Create 5 million green jobs, conserving 20% of our energy by 2015.
* Freeze climate pollution levels now and cut at least 80% by 2050 and 25% by 2020.
* No new coal plants that emit global warming pollution. Invest in renewable energy.

When we seriously address climate change and cut carbon emissions in line with the current science, we will have created millions of new green-collar jobs, prevented the construction of new dirty coal-fired power plants, and established a more secure, prosperous and vibrant America. Nothing short of our future is at stake. [Your Comment] As you campaign for your party's Presidential nomination, we ask that you make solving global warming a central message and a top priority. Humans do not have the right to permanently dominate and abuse the homes of so many living creatures and wildlife habitats: Earth. The health of the planet affects everyone on it, especially our children. Big coal companies should not be setting profits as more important than the air a child or living creature breaths. When an an animal is suffering from the environment such as the drowning of polar bears in the arctic, it is a clear sign that people will also be endangered. The effects of global warming can become irreversible and recovery will be impossible, if the damages are actuality. The time to convert and find cleaner and sources of cleaner energy sources is overdue. Wind, water, and solar are reusable for a reason.

I have never in my life seen so many natural disasters in so short a time. The ravages of Katrina aren't even fully recovered from and now Iowa is under water and IL is flooding. Food costs are going to be astronomical since the corn belt will have dismal harvests, which will ripple through the entire agricultural industry and send a shock wave through the economy as a whole. Please, act now!

With a 20 foot sea rise, Honolulu will be under water as will the airports on Oahu and Kauai. The communities of Wainai, Ewa on Oahu and the towns of Kapaa, Eleele, Hanalei and Waimea on Kaua'i will also be under water.

What are ya gonna do with all that money you're making if there's no where to spend it? Gore should have need the president, it seems. He seems to be caring for the right cause. Global warming is a serious issue, why can't people in power see that? Wise up!
