Show the Candidates the Many Faces of Climate Change

Target: U.S. Presidential Candidates
Sponsored by: 1Sky

The debate is over -- the National Academy of Sciences and thousands of scientists agree that the planet is warming. Now it's time to make the effects of global warming real for the presidential candidates.

Is global warming putting you and your community at risk for floods or hurricanes? Is it making water more scarce? Sign the petition, and let the presidential candidates know!

After a decade of stalling, we need real leadership on climate change:

  • Job creation in a clean energy economy.
  • A moratorium on building new coal-fired power plants.
  • The reduction of emissions levels in scale with what the science demands.

Tell the candidates what global warming means to your community and tell them to commit to be climate leaders in 2008 and beyond.

deadline: Ongoing...
goal: 30,000

Dear [Decision Maker]

The debate is over. The National Academy of Sciences and thousands of scientists worldwide agree that the planet is warming and that human dependence on fossil fuels such as coal and oil is the primary cause. If we do not act quickly and boldly, we will face irreversible and potentially devastating climate change impacts. There is still time to rise to the challenge, but America needs strong leadership to do so.

We need to:

* Create 5 million green jobs, conserving 20% of our energy by 2015.
* Freeze climate pollution levels now and cut at least 80% by 2050 and 25% by 2020.
* No new coal plants that emit global warming pollution. Invest in renewable energy.

I live in a rural community. I see the effect of crop failures, too little rain or too much rain, too cold a Spring or a summer that is too hot wherein you lose not only crops but herd animals at the same time. Do we understand that this is a global issue and we in the US have to stop wringing our hands and do something about it or do we say to our grandchildren--this was once a beautiful world?

Global warming is just that....GLOBAL, therefore ALL countries need to step up to the plate and take a very active role. It is not just an isolated case of a polar bear, seal or other occasional wildlife that might not have enough sea/land to live, it is GLOBAL i.e., the water, the air, the land. Any sustainable environment in which both people and animals/wildlife cohabitate are threatened. We do NOT wish to LEAVE to our CHILDREN the HERITAGE of doing NOTHING, and then they have NOTHING; no clean air, water, or even proper land in which to live their lives. NOW not later is the time. GLOBAL WARMING is not something a "scientist" cooked up in his lab to "scare" people, it is REAL. Therefore do the "real" and appropriate thing, TAKE ACTION NOW. Thank you.

None of us can afford to view global warming as a myth. Above all, however, our political leaders must take the forefront in protecting natural resources so that our planet can survive. Please do your part to ensure that climate change is stopped !
