Ban Mercury from the Last Four Chlorine Plants Nationwide Still Relying On It!
Target:U.S. House of Representatives Sponsored by:Oceana
When released to the environment, mercury ends up in our oceans, contaminating seafood. Humans and other creatures exposed to high levels of mercury in fish can experience serious health effects. Some chlorine plants emit four times as much mercury as the average power plant. Across the country, only four polluting chlorine plants have yet to agree to switch to mercury free technology. That's four too many! What's more, recent studies suggest that many animals are affected by mercury pollution, from songbirds to polar bears. And this mercury use is completely unnecessary; these animals - like our oceans - are suffering needlessly! New legislation called the Missing Mercury in Manufacturing Monitoring and Mitigation Act (HR 5580) would require all chlorine companies to switch to mercury-free technology by 2012. Sign the petition and urge your Representative to co-sponsor HR 5580.
We signed the “Ban Mercury from the Last Four Chlorine Plants Nationwide Still Relying On It!” petition!

I used to live near Dow Chemical's Headquarters. They are the world's largest producer of Chlorine products. Their workers have a high rate of cancers and respiratory diseases. Imagine the effect on the public. A broken thermometer on the floor of a school science room requires a haz-mat team, where is the haz-mat team for the air?

Poisoning of the environment by the output of mercury from chlorine plants should be made illegal. We all suffer from their ignorance and deficit of responsibility. The companies will also set a good example for others when they switch to new and less aversive technology.

The Drs. say eat fish for a healthy heart. BUt we are told eat it no more than 2 times a week because of the mercury content. I would be nice to ave clean oceans so our fish are safe once again

What concerns me most is that we have long understood the dangers of mercury to our health and yet we still allow mercury to be knowingly released into the ocean and ultimately the food chain. This should be stopped now.

This is appalling. Mercury is detrimental to the health of pregnant women, fetuses, people in general and animals.

The ill effects of mercury are dire. Its overuse must be reined in.
