Stop Abuse of Farmed Animals during Transport

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Animal Protection Institute
Billions of animals are transported to slaughter each year in the United States and across our borders, suffering terribly in the process. They endure deprivation of food and water, exposure to extreme heat or cold, overcrowding and injury, and lack of opportunity for rest.

These cruel transport practices and the misery they cause are driven by economics and fueled by a lack of government oversight. Animals pay the price in pain and suffering to provide cheap meat to consumers and to increase meat industry profits.

What is most shocking; there is effectively no federal regulation of farmed animal transportation in the United States. Current law allows livestock to be transported for up to 28 hours without food, rest, or water, but this law is rarely, if ever, enforced. Even if enforced, 28 hours is far too long to assure the well-being of transported farm animals.

Join us in calling on congress to enact meaningful legislation to regulate the transport of farmed animals throughout the United States and across our borders.

Dear Congress,

I am writing to urge you to enact legislation to regulate the transportation via truck of animals used in food production. This legislation is needed to provide humane treatment of animals as well as disease control.

[your comment here]

Although Congress has enacted more than 50 statutes related to animal welfare, there is essentially no federal regulation of farmed animal transportation in the United States. Only two laws address the welfare of animals raised for food or food production: the 28-hour law and the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. Neither of these laws applies to animals transported by truck, despite the fact that this is the nation's primary method of transporting farmed animals. Further, even if the 28-hour law was applied to farmed animals transported in trucks, this law would still fail to provide humane treatment to these animals.

Animals suffer terribly while transported in trucks. Problems that commonly occur during long-distance transport include deprivation of food and water, exposure to extreme heat or cold, overcrowding and injury, and lack of opportunity for rest. Given that hundreds of millions of animals are transported by truck annually, the scale of suffering is immense.

Moreover, stressed and injured animals are more likely to become infected with, spread, or succumb to disease. Long-distance transport across state and national borders and movement through auctions further increases the potential of serious disease outbreaks. New advancements in tracking systems can be used to enforce transport regulations, in addition to providing expedient means of tracking animals exposed to or infected with diseases.

For the sake of animal welfare and human health, please enact legislation that establishes humane treatment standards for farmed animals transported in all types of vehicles and that lessens the animals' journey time.

Thank you for your consideration.

Why is there no law already that regulates the transport of farmed animals? THis is very cruel and completely unacceptable in the U.S.

First, these animals have feelings. They hurt, bleed, and have emotions such as ours. Would people on a transport bus be treated this way?

Since they are being sacrificed for you, it's only fair to treat them right and with respect. After all, they didn't asked to be killed. All animals have the desire to live, not just humans.

Not only during transport, but the whole of their lives, these intensively farmed animals suffer terribly. It is a terrible indictment of any country which tolerates this inhumanity, the more so when it is one of the so-called "civilised"countries, such as the US (or Australia)It's well past time we stopped prostrating ourselves on the altars of profit and big business - it does us no good whatever as a society.

Jesus said it best: "For I was hungry and you gave me no food; I was thirsty and you gave me no drink; I was a stranger, and you did not take me in, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me. Then they also will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then will he answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me." (Matthew 25:42-45) Contained within every evil(greedy profiteering republican) act are the seeds of its own destruction. Adhere to the teachings of Jesus, as contained in The Urantia Book, or else suffer the consequences. It IS that simple. TRUTH has been spoken to power, Peace will prevail. Buck Fush! No animal should be abused in this or any fashion. But it is SO typical of our government to cast blind eyes to this sort of treatment because all you really care about is the almighty dollar, no matter who suffers in the process.

Wonder why there are so many diseases and disorders excist in this world??!! It has a lot to do the way we treat the animals and they way they are slaughted!!!! Animals who suffered and treated without any regards nor proper food/water carries the NEGATIVE ENERGY, which includes FEAR and PAIN along when they die and guess who eats them ???????!!!!!!!!!! Science can't prove everything !!!! This world has so much health problems and it has a lot to do with inhumane treatment of farm animals!!! Do we really think that we get away with whatever that we do to animals because they can't fight back????!!!!!! THINK about all of the CANCERS, Unexplained mental DEPRESSIONS, DIABETES, PHOBIAS, CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DISORDERS, PANIC DISORDERS....etc????!!!!!! If we treat animals and other habitants in this world with respect and kindness, this world will become a much better world, and we humans will become healthier and happier!!!!!!!!

The way we treat animals reflects our TRUE nature---this is so true!!!!!!! Dear Congress: These animals have sacrificed their lives to give you food, to "satisfy" your tastebuds. They live in extremely horrific condition and then only to be slaughtered. Have you heard their cries and screams when they are slaughted????!!!! They can't even be treated with a little, just a little kindness?????????!!!!!!! What happened to humanity?????? We are talking about the U.S--One of the most civilized countries in the world and we can't even treat our animals, with a little kindness??????? Shame on you people!!!!!!!!!! That's why I am a VEGETARIAN!!!!!!!! Do you see how much food is wasted everyday ??????? How much sufferrings and deaths of these innocent, defenseless animals are all for nothing!!!!!!!! What happened to our hearts???? Do we only show kindness when our actions could be judged by those who have a voice??????!!!!!!!! Aren't that HYPOCRITES????? So, we treat innocent animals anyhow we like simply because they can't fight back or talk back...even when they sacrifice their lives for people???!!!! WHAT DOES THAT TELL ABOUT US???? PLEASE...there is no doubt that they have feelings and are capable to feel PAIN just as we do, so why do we have to be soooo cruel to them???? Just because it has been this way doesn't mean it has to continue to be such. TIME TO STOP THE BRUTALITY !!!!!! TIME to become truely civilized !!!!

I know first hand how these animals are treated because I used to be married to a "ranch hand" at the famous "King Ranch" and though I am a meat eater, they should not have to be treated so inhumanely!!

Farmed animals arent on this planet for long as it is,the needless suffering they are put through is inhuman and should not be tolerated, its appalling that this continues to happen these days for the profit of the greedy.

Stop the abuse of Farmed Animals Fullstop! Not ONLY during transport! Only recently had I to wake up to the fact how our animals on the plate to be actually have to endure their short existence. Bred only to suffer and then to be killed. I say man gets SICK from eating animals which are KEPT under such conditions! Maybe only rarely sick physically but sick in many other ways. We must give farm animals the respect and life conditions they deserve. Last but not least because they are sentient beings just as ourselves! “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” - Gandhi

Animals, even those that are raised for food should not have to suffer ill treatment anymore than your pet german shepherd. I have read numerous news reports over my lifetime, about people being prosecuted for the ill treatment and neglect of their animals, including farm animals. It's very important to enact a law that will protect all animals. I find it appalling that this is going on and no one cares because it's all about big money .. if the average owner were to inflict such suffering on their animals they would be facing criminal charges. What a shame that the almightly dollar should make anyone an exception.

I'm absolutely disgusted about the abuse of farmed animals during transport. I've always cringed whenever passing a truck w/ farmed animals on the highway, and have convinced others not to eat meat after witnessing such abuse. Please enact a law regulating the transport of farmed animals. This is outrageous!

This is enough to drive anyone to vegetarianism; this is too cruel! You need to enact a law regulating the transport of farmed animals; it's the right and honourable thing to do.
