Stop Abuse of Farmed Animals during Transport

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Animal Protection Institute
Billions of animals are transported to slaughter each year in the United States and across our borders, suffering terribly in the process. They endure deprivation of food and water, exposure to extreme heat or cold, overcrowding and injury, and lack of opportunity for rest.

These cruel transport practices and the misery they cause are driven by economics and fueled by a lack of government oversight. Animals pay the price in pain and suffering to provide cheap meat to consumers and to increase meat industry profits.

What is most shocking; there is effectively no federal regulation of farmed animal transportation in the United States. Current law allows livestock to be transported for up to 28 hours without food, rest, or water, but this law is rarely, if ever, enforced. Even if enforced, 28 hours is far too long to assure the well-being of transported farm animals.

Join us in calling on congress to enact meaningful legislation to regulate the transport of farmed animals throughout the United States and across our borders.

Dear Congress,

I am writing to urge you to enact legislation to regulate the transportation via truck of animals used in food production. This legislation is needed to provide humane treatment of animals as well as disease control.

[your comment here]

Although Congress has enacted more than 50 statutes related to animal welfare, there is essentially no federal regulation of farmed animal transportation in the United States. Only two laws address the welfare of animals raised for food or food production: the 28-hour law and the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. Neither of these laws applies to animals transported by truck, despite the fact that this is the nation's primary method of transporting farmed animals. Further, even if the 28-hour law was applied to farmed animals transported in trucks, this law would still fail to provide humane treatment to these animals.

Animals suffer terribly while transported in trucks. Problems that commonly occur during long-distance transport include deprivation of food and water, exposure to extreme heat or cold, overcrowding and injury, and lack of opportunity for rest. Given that hundreds of millions of animals are transported by truck annually, the scale of suffering is immense.

Moreover, stressed and injured animals are more likely to become infected with, spread, or succumb to disease. Long-distance transport across state and national borders and movement through auctions further increases the potential of serious disease outbreaks. New advancements in tracking systems can be used to enforce transport regulations, in addition to providing expedient means of tracking animals exposed to or infected with diseases.

For the sake of animal welfare and human health, please enact legislation that establishes humane treatment standards for farmed animals transported in all types of vehicles and that lessens the animals' journey time.

Thank you for your consideration.

They should not need to be told that the conditions the animals are transported in is barabaric. They must intigate a much better humane way of transorting animals ASAP!

Not only are these wonderful animals horridly abused at the factory farms, but transport is practically worse. No room whatsoever, no food, no water. I'm a proud vegan and I demand that this method of shipping animals end immediately.

This is the one thing that makes me the most mad. We should be treating each animal with respect and kindness till the VERY end, there is no reason not too.We are all Gods creatures.

This is such a cruel practice, please put a stop to it. The USA should lead the way! This goes on in many westernised countries Australia included -it is appalling. Animals should not have to suffer being transported over such distances in this manner. Live animal export and transportation should be stopped it is not necessary with modern refrigeration methods - if meat has to be consumed surely it is more humane to slaughter and transport rather than transport and then slaughter.

Its not fair at all how cruel people are to animals. Its not right how cruel people are to the farm animals. They think just beacuse they're only going to kill them they could just throw them around HA I dont think so. We need to put an end to this madness.

Although I understand the provision of meat with this industry, there is absolutely no reason to allow these animals to suffer prior to their sad demise. They weren't put here for this reason. But, humans have chosen to use them for slaughter. I am disgusted that the US would allow them to suffer so severly. Animal life is just as precious as human life. Please allow them to live humanely.

Acts of abuse toward animals, and humans, is not only wrong, it's is also absolutely unnecessary. I feel embarrassed, frustrated and deeply concerned that animal abuse continues to happen on a daily basis, unchecked, by a society that calls themselves civilized.

Scientific evidence indicates that nonhuman vertebrates are equally able to experience sufferage through pain and stress. After all the neuroendocrine systems are basically identical to the human system.
