Stop Abuse of Farmed Animals during Transport

Target: U.S. Congress
Sponsored by: Animal Protection Institute
Billions of animals are transported to slaughter each year in the United States and across our borders, suffering terribly in the process. They endure deprivation of food and water, exposure to extreme heat or cold, overcrowding and injury, and lack of opportunity for rest.

These cruel transport practices and the misery they cause are driven by economics and fueled by a lack of government oversight. Animals pay the price in pain and suffering to provide cheap meat to consumers and to increase meat industry profits.

What is most shocking; there is effectively no federal regulation of farmed animal transportation in the United States. Current law allows livestock to be transported for up to 28 hours without food, rest, or water, but this law is rarely, if ever, enforced. Even if enforced, 28 hours is far too long to assure the well-being of transported farm animals.

Join us in calling on congress to enact meaningful legislation to regulate the transport of farmed animals throughout the United States and across our borders.

Dear Congress,

I am writing to urge you to enact legislation to regulate the transportation via truck of animals used in food production. This legislation is needed to provide humane treatment of animals as well as disease control.

[your comment here]

Although Congress has enacted more than 50 statutes related to animal welfare, there is essentially no federal regulation of farmed animal transportation in the United States. Only two laws address the welfare of animals raised for food or food production: the 28-hour law and the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. Neither of these laws applies to animals transported by truck, despite the fact that this is the nation's primary method of transporting farmed animals. Further, even if the 28-hour law was applied to farmed animals transported in trucks, this law would still fail to provide humane treatment to these animals.

Animals suffer terribly while transported in trucks. Problems that commonly occur during long-distance transport include deprivation of food and water, exposure to extreme heat or cold, overcrowding and injury, and lack of opportunity for rest. Given that hundreds of millions of animals are transported by truck annually, the scale of suffering is immense.

Moreover, stressed and injured animals are more likely to become infected with, spread, or succumb to disease. Long-distance transport across state and national borders and movement through auctions further increases the potential of serious disease outbreaks. New advancements in tracking systems can be used to enforce transport regulations, in addition to providing expedient means of tracking animals exposed to or infected with diseases.

For the sake of animal welfare and human health, please enact legislation that establishes humane treatment standards for farmed animals transported in all types of vehicles and that lessens the animals' journey time.

Thank you for your consideration.

Please stop abuse of farmed animals during transport. Stop animal cruelty. Laws and regulations should be stablished, in order to prevent animal suffering. These animal transportation, should be inspected on the road by the police, and reported in case of deviations of the law, with penalties and jail included.

Animals deserve respect and better treatment during transport and the process of being taken into the killing factories. We must remember they are only one step below us on the food chain and are being treated as were the jews during the world wars. This must stop.

Unconscious, evil humans treat animals like this and consume them. Both the factory farmers and those who consume their products have no morals. Once you know what is happening, you need to change your diet. No spiritual person could partake in torture of other living beings. The world is what we make it.

The meat industry is a harm most importantly to the suffering animals who exist in demoralizing and complete inhumane conditions; you need to OPEN your eyes and ears - listen to the people and develop a conscious CHANGE NEEDS TO HAPPEN IN THIS WORLD REGARDING ANIMALS!
