Tell GM to Offer Real Hybrid Solutions Today

Target: G. Richard Wagoner, Chairman and CEO of the General Motors Corporation
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists

Hybrid technology has the potential to provide us with cleaner, more fuel-efficient options in every vehicle class, as exemplified by the Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Toyota Prius.

On March 20, General Motors (GM) vice chairman Bob Lutz admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake."

Yet GM continues to make that same mistake. Its new "two mode" hybrid SUVs, the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrids, actually feature larger gasoline engines than most conventional versions of these models. The electric motor provides an additional power boost but only a modest gain in overall fuel economy.

Please write to chairman and chief executive officer, Richard Wagoner. Let him know that General Motors can only be a true market leader if his company uses hybrid technology to its fullest potential.

Dear Mr. Wagoner:

Your company recently launched an online initiative to solicit dialogue with consumers. With that in mind, I am writing to express my concerns regarding General Motors' use of hybrid technologies.

As gas prices continue to skyrocket, and we face the threat of dangerous global warming, I am disappointed that GM has decided to use its hybrid technology to boost vehicle power instead of boosting fuel economy. By attaching hybrid technology to larger, gas-thirsty gasoline engines on your Yukon and Tahoe Hybrid models, GM has chosen to boost muscle instead of miles.

GM vice chairman Bob Lutz recently admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake." Yet GM continues to make that same mistake with its current hybrid models by focusing today's technology on power instead of fuel economy. If GM instead focused on giving consumers efficient options in every vehicle class using both conventional and hybrid technologies, it could emerge once again as a genuine automotive leader.
We sent a letter to GM supporting hybrid technology!

How sad, 14 years wasted while Republicans blocked fuel inefficiency increases, American car manufacturers lost out to foreign competitors. We need to not focus on 0-60, but how far can i go on a gallon of gas. This how we need to measure performance. Why do you still have a job? Based on your past poor performance you should be out.

This country and the world at large are facing increasing devastation from global warming. General Motors needs to use its hybrid technology to boost fuel economy rather than waste it boosting vehicle power. I know that the bottom line is what you care about, but more and more people are looking for vehicles that save them at the gas pumps. And if you want to compete at all globally, you will need such vehicles for international sales. Here is a clear cut case where doing the right thing can also be beneficial to your bottom line. Please take a leadership position in this vital area.

Come on you guys...for the benefit of all...we have the technology to get off the oil addiction. You can be on the cutting edge or lagging far behind supporting the oil industry that's no good for anyone except for the handful making record profits while we pay the bill!

I do want to support American business but you don't seem to be providing what we need and want. We have one hybrid (sorry, the Japanese profitted from this one) and are in the market for either a "plug-in" with a range of 150-200 miles or if that isn't possible a "quick charge" capability that doesn't require an overnight charge. Solar panels provide our electric energy at home. A plug-in, not a golf cart, should have safety features that do not make driving one on Interstates, a game of Russian Roulette. It can be done, American ingenuity is what made this country great. The people of this nation aren't ready to "throw-in-the-towel", why is the auto industry? You build a better car, in keeping with the needs of our citizens and you won't be able to keep them in stock.

I've been driving bonafide hybrids for seven years and they are serviceable, fun and relatively much less expensive to drive.

It is NOT important to have vehicles on roads, that go 2- 3 times faster than the speed limit, taking more pedestrian and drivers' lives ! What we really need, is fuel efficient and environmentally safe, vehicles ! Please look further into the minds of the geniuses that make these wonderful Hybrid vehicles, to see their great potential to sell more frequently, adding to the progress of our fight, to make a cleaner environment, for more of your customers to survive in.

Maybe hybrids are overpriced NOW - but that's mainly b/c the technology's still first-generation. I'd like to see more development of hybrid technology so they become more affordable and fuel-efficient - and that can't happen w/out your help.

I have always purchased and driven GM cars, but unless you do better on feul economy and pollution control, or hybrids or better, I will have to go elsewhere in the future. Your choice.

With the gas prices so high, you should stop naking those SUV tanks and build more hybirds! As we see in the newspapers, you are losing money by the billions! When will you learn???

I already drive a hybrid , and everywhere I go , someone asks how many miles per gallon I get . People are interested in lowering their fuel costs . Anything other than a hybrid getting 40 mpg or better is not even an option . You are losing business by not marketing to those of us that care about the planet .

We should move BEYOND hybrids and petroleum (and its derivatives) for automobiles, plastics, cosmetics, cleaners, etc. We should have already been creating technologically superior cars using alternative fuels and/or no fuels (electric or solar).
