Tell GM to Offer Real Hybrid Solutions Today

Target: G. Richard Wagoner, Chairman and CEO of the General Motors Corporation
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists

Hybrid technology has the potential to provide us with cleaner, more fuel-efficient options in every vehicle class, as exemplified by the Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Toyota Prius.

On March 20, General Motors (GM) vice chairman Bob Lutz admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake."

Yet GM continues to make that same mistake. Its new "two mode" hybrid SUVs, the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrids, actually feature larger gasoline engines than most conventional versions of these models. The electric motor provides an additional power boost but only a modest gain in overall fuel economy.

Please write to chairman and chief executive officer, Richard Wagoner. Let him know that General Motors can only be a true market leader if his company uses hybrid technology to its fullest potential.

Dear Mr. Wagoner:

Your company recently launched an online initiative to solicit dialogue with consumers. With that in mind, I am writing to express my concerns regarding General Motors' use of hybrid technologies.

As gas prices continue to skyrocket, and we face the threat of dangerous global warming, I am disappointed that GM has decided to use its hybrid technology to boost vehicle power instead of boosting fuel economy. By attaching hybrid technology to larger, gas-thirsty gasoline engines on your Yukon and Tahoe Hybrid models, GM has chosen to boost muscle instead of miles.

GM vice chairman Bob Lutz recently admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake." Yet GM continues to make that same mistake with its current hybrid models by focusing today's technology on power instead of fuel economy. If GM instead focused on giving consumers efficient options in every vehicle class using both conventional and hybrid technologies, it could emerge once again as a genuine automotive leader.
We sent a letter to GM supporting hybrid technology!

You are proving to be idiots to the end; all that red ink and lots filled with SUV's and trucks you can't sell must be great!

In the face of Toyota's hot selling Prius, in the face of Honda's popular hybrid modes, and in the face of $4.00 gas!...how could you guys NOT produce a fuel-efficient car to compete and give Americans more jobs? Americans don't need any more gas guzzlers like what you produce. Wake up GM! Start making high efficiency hybrid or hydrogen fuel cell vehicles now!

We need to reduce dependency on oil............we need fuel efficient vehicles, not bigger, more powerful vehicles. Sharon Delphenich

What more has to happen before Detroit wakes up? Maybe it's time to ressurect the EV-1. When the public can't afford to fuel their cars, will the Oil Companies support you and buy your inventory?

The foreign car companies are killing you financially. Their cars run longer and have less problems. You get more mile out of your gas tank and now the foreign car companies came out with the Hybrid car first. For shame!!! The Hybrid cars appeal to a large portion of the United States population: Women, Mothers, Nature Lover ( Be it your garden vareity environmentalist / recycler, naturalist, vegetarian / vegan, yogi / yoga student) or those that I didn't sterotypically mention. Think about OUR future not just your wallet.

Just today the price for a gallon of regular unleaded jumped up to $3.99 a gallon here in Kalamazoo. Now, I'm in the market to buy a new car, and to be quite honest, I am NOT looking to buy anything in the American market. When I can go buy a brand new Kia that gets me 35-40 MPG, why on this Earth would I pay more for an American vehicle that gets the same, or in most cases, less MPG than what I can get from a (lately) more dependable foreign car market? It's time for the "big 3" to make a change and figure out what the foreign companies have already done, or continue to see slumping sales and lost profits.

GM needs to realize that the future is in energy efficient vehicles. The shocks at the gas pump are going to continue, and you are ignoring a growing group of buyers. Take a leadership role and do the right thing; help the planet while helping your bottom line. How many times do you have that opportunity?

I live outside of Detroit, and am very aware of the impact on our community of the choices GM makes. With gas prices approaching $4/gallon, the American public cannot afford for you to chooose power over fuel economy. Please, do not have this be the 1970's all over again.

It's amazing that GM continues to be short sighted by using hybrid technology to boost vehicle power instead of boosting fuel economy. What are you thinking? Give me a Prius any day over any of your gas-guzzling SUV pigs. Get a clue.
