Tell GM to Offer Real Hybrid Solutions Today

Target: G. Richard Wagoner, Chairman and CEO of the General Motors Corporation
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists

Hybrid technology has the potential to provide us with cleaner, more fuel-efficient options in every vehicle class, as exemplified by the Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Toyota Prius.

On March 20, General Motors (GM) vice chairman Bob Lutz admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake."

Yet GM continues to make that same mistake. Its new "two mode" hybrid SUVs, the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrids, actually feature larger gasoline engines than most conventional versions of these models. The electric motor provides an additional power boost but only a modest gain in overall fuel economy.

Please write to chairman and chief executive officer, Richard Wagoner. Let him know that General Motors can only be a true market leader if his company uses hybrid technology to its fullest potential.

Dear Mr. Wagoner:

Your company recently launched an online initiative to solicit dialogue with consumers. With that in mind, I am writing to express my concerns regarding General Motors' use of hybrid technologies.

As gas prices continue to skyrocket, and we face the threat of dangerous global warming, I am disappointed that GM has decided to use its hybrid technology to boost vehicle power instead of boosting fuel economy. By attaching hybrid technology to larger, gas-thirsty gasoline engines on your Yukon and Tahoe Hybrid models, GM has chosen to boost muscle instead of miles.

GM vice chairman Bob Lutz recently admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake." Yet GM continues to make that same mistake with its current hybrid models by focusing today's technology on power instead of fuel economy. If GM instead focused on giving consumers efficient options in every vehicle class using both conventional and hybrid technologies, it could emerge once again as a genuine automotive leader.
We sent a letter to GM supporting hybrid technology!

It would be great to see a hybrid SUV on a small to midsize level that is affordable as well as economical. Gas prices are way out of hand and there are those who use there vehicles for work and need space, but necessarily in a really large vehicle.

The writing is on the wall and we the people are demanding that those who have the power to absorb it act accordingly. High gas prices are HORRIBLE for the American economy in too may ways for this forum. To continue to rely on an oil based economy is detrimental to the Earth and devastating to 85+% of the citizens of this country. Please focus on creating the ultimate hybrid that maximizes miles to the gallon. While you are at it, expand your company and create some jobs, so that more people can afford these cars when they roll off the assemble lines. Thank you!

You once had a highly successful electric car and then destroyed them. Make a commitment towards hybrids or another car not dependent on fossil fuel and the market will be there.

I grew up in Flint Michigan. If Gm made an electric car or hybrid I would have bought it to support my home town. Instead I had to by a Toyota Prius, I feel like such a trator. But I do feel good about getting 52 miles per gallon today in my drive to Seattle and back. WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR? Best wishes, help save my home town. Jeff Carr

I want the use of ecology destroying fuels decresed. This needs to be addressed immediately, not some year in the future. There is no reason why we need to be using gasoline or corn! Please be responsible.

My last 2 cars were GM cars and I had planned on buying another one this time around. But, I sure won't if GM doesn't come up with a "real" hybrid.
