Tell GM to Offer Real Hybrid Solutions Today

Target: G. Richard Wagoner, Chairman and CEO of the General Motors Corporation
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists

Hybrid technology has the potential to provide us with cleaner, more fuel-efficient options in every vehicle class, as exemplified by the Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Toyota Prius.

On March 20, General Motors (GM) vice chairman Bob Lutz admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake."

Yet GM continues to make that same mistake. Its new "two mode" hybrid SUVs, the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrids, actually feature larger gasoline engines than most conventional versions of these models. The electric motor provides an additional power boost but only a modest gain in overall fuel economy.

Please write to chairman and chief executive officer, Richard Wagoner. Let him know that General Motors can only be a true market leader if his company uses hybrid technology to its fullest potential.

Dear Mr. Wagoner:

Your company recently launched an online initiative to solicit dialogue with consumers. With that in mind, I am writing to express my concerns regarding General Motors' use of hybrid technologies.

As gas prices continue to skyrocket, and we face the threat of dangerous global warming, I am disappointed that GM has decided to use its hybrid technology to boost vehicle power instead of boosting fuel economy. By attaching hybrid technology to larger, gas-thirsty gasoline engines on your Yukon and Tahoe Hybrid models, GM has chosen to boost muscle instead of miles.

GM vice chairman Bob Lutz recently admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake." Yet GM continues to make that same mistake with its current hybrid models by focusing today's technology on power instead of fuel economy. If GM instead focused on giving consumers efficient options in every vehicle class using both conventional and hybrid technologies, it could emerge once again as a genuine automotive leader.
We sent a letter to GM supporting hybrid technology!

They have had years of warning. The "shock" over closing SUV plants is disgusting. Sorry, no sympathy here!

Mr. Wagoner: After years of buying Hondas and Toyotas there is nothing I would like better than to buy an American car again. PLEASE, let GM be the one to make that car. The best made hybrid out there, the best fuel efficiency, the best green car and affordable and safe. Is that too much of a challenge? Stop with the big suvs already and put American cars back on the map. I promise you I'll stop buying Hondas and buy that one.

Oh, I would like to bring back the EV1. Seriously. Electrical car... Electric car.. I will not be buying GM products, unless it's better than HYbrid or like the EV1 technology.

Yes, please ask him to provide an affordable hybrid that will get hopefully as much mileage as the Toyota Prius. The prius gets great mileage, but only people with high salaries can afford it. Some of the other hybrids are also too expense for us middle class folks. I would like to see something that us working class poor can afford. We certainly can't afford the price of gas these days!

Mr. Wagoner: My last two brand new vehicles were GM - both minivans - both essentially the same. The 2005 gets 6 miles less to a gallon of gas than my Montana did. My mom's new Cadillac is the same way. Your company needs to get it together. We need fuel economy, not more toys. And for those of us ranchers - we want fuel economy and power. Maybe you can be the first to REALLY figure that one out and truly get back on top.

How did you get so lost ? If you offered an all electric car, an lp/gas hybred, a reasonable gas/hybred, or any inexpensive two seater with high millage people could drive to and from work and back, they would sell like crazy and WE ALL KNOW IT. So the question is, will YOU ever do it ????

in today's world, the hybrid is a perfect opportunity not only to help our environment, but to put it bluntly, help with the current gas situation. Not only that, but Americans would again have a chance to show the world that we can have American workers build cars that are just as good as foreign builders and it would help put our people back to work where they belong!

In this day, it is so important to have fuel-efficient cars and means of transportation! Better yet, bring back your EV1! Millions of Americans are waiting for companies like yours - which historically have embodied so many of the values that typify America - to recapture your leadership position by thinking outside the box and leading the American auto industry by doing the right thing, instead of being led by surveys and focus groups. What are you guys thinking? The people of the United States need more cars with the hybrid technology to eliminate the dependency from foreign gas company and help the economy by saving gasoline. I currently drive a 1998 Saturn SL1 that despite being 10 years old still get 39 mpg. I have a 10-year-old Toyota that still gets 35 MPG on the freeway. This is a fact. Fuel-efficient hybrids help to cut down gas usage and emissions. With gas prices rising the way they are, it's not only detrimental to the environment to be driving gas-guzzlers, but also harmful to your business because consumers will seek alternatives that you cannot provide. What is worse was GM killing the electric car year’s ago- when they should have been continuing to LEAD in this work. I drive a Toyota because of its incredible efficiency and reliability. GM clearly has the technology but its leadership apparently lacks the courage to bring it to the market in a meaningful way. Instead of lying off workers, are innovative- build smaller, energy efficient vehicles - How about a hybrid truck??? It's really irresponsible to make those big Suva’s when there's just a finite amount of oil in the earth. I find that it is by far healthier to breath-unpolluted air. We would like to see you come up with a vehicle to compete with Toyota Yarns, or Nissan Versa, or Honda Sport, Fit. I wanted to buy one 6 months ago but the wait was too long so I bought Rave 4.

We would like to see you come up with a vehicle to compete with Toyota Yaris, or Nissan Versa, or Honda Sport, Fit.or the Prius. We just bought a new Dodge Caliber because of the back seats that fold down, gets about 30 mi. per gallon. We gave away our old Dodge Caravan. The Toyota & Hondas get about 37 mi. per gallon.
