Tell GM to Offer Real Hybrid Solutions Today

Target: G. Richard Wagoner, Chairman and CEO of the General Motors Corporation
Sponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists

Hybrid technology has the potential to provide us with cleaner, more fuel-efficient options in every vehicle class, as exemplified by the Ford Escape Hybrid, Honda Civic Hybrid, and Toyota Prius.

On March 20, General Motors (GM) vice chairman Bob Lutz admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake."

Yet GM continues to make that same mistake. Its new "two mode" hybrid SUVs, the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon Hybrids, actually feature larger gasoline engines than most conventional versions of these models. The electric motor provides an additional power boost but only a modest gain in overall fuel economy.

Please write to chairman and chief executive officer, Richard Wagoner. Let him know that General Motors can only be a true market leader if his company uses hybrid technology to its fullest potential.

Dear Mr. Wagoner:

Your company recently launched an online initiative to solicit dialogue with consumers. With that in mind, I am writing to express my concerns regarding General Motors' use of hybrid technologies.

As gas prices continue to skyrocket, and we face the threat of dangerous global warming, I am disappointed that GM has decided to use its hybrid technology to boost vehicle power instead of boosting fuel economy. By attaching hybrid technology to larger, gas-thirsty gasoline engines on your Yukon and Tahoe Hybrid models, GM has chosen to boost muscle instead of miles.

GM vice chairman Bob Lutz recently admitted at the New York Auto Show that not making a vehicle like the Prius was "a mistake." Yet GM continues to make that same mistake with its current hybrid models by focusing today's technology on power instead of fuel economy. If GM instead focused on giving consumers efficient options in every vehicle class using both conventional and hybrid technologies, it could emerge once again as a genuine automotive leader.
We sent a letter to GM supporting hybrid technology!

Want to boost sales Mr. Wagoner? Who do you think make most of the decisions in this country? Who do you think is more interested in promoting Green Technology? Who do you think likes to have Green options? Take a look at the demographics, Mr. Wagoner. WOMEN in this country are the main decision makers. You may not like that, but it's a true statement. (By the way, who is in charge of your marketing?)

Let's face it gas prices are up, and we can't afford to get to work. Why not be a hybrid giant, and make something that's a hybrid and that is affordable to the rest of society. Let's keep an American company in business and adapt to change. I own a huge GM truck, and can't afford the gas in it. I will buy a GM if you make one that is a hybrid and is affordable to a family that needs it.

I'm ready to buy a new car this month, and a GM product would be my first choice, but I can't in good conscience purchase any of your current products.

Make them because people want them. Look at Toyota. A big reason they overtook you in sales is because they provide the hybrid. It's not only the right thing to do, but it's good business for you as well.

So not making something like the Prius was a mistake...why not correct your mistake and MAKE ONE?

We would not have such a problem with the gas shortage if we had lower costing hybrids! America is a country of excess and we don't need the speed or the larger sizes- too dangerous!

I let go of the idea of driving because of the huge expense and environmental impact. I will buy a car again when it is not run by gasoline and when it becomes more affordable. Also, we don't need giant cars. Small to mid size suites me.

We'd also like to see plug-in hybrids or straight electric vehicles (the Volt looks promising). Take a look at the open source hypercar designed by the Rocky Mt Institute - we'd be much better off with cars like these! Get 'em on the road and don't make the same mistakes you did with the EV1.
