Put Horse Slaughter Down for Good!

Target: Gregory Hammer, President of the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA)
Sponsored by: National Horse Protection League

© Sean Sauber

We think of veterinarians as gentle animal advocates, yet the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), and its president, Gregory Hammer, refuse to denounce the cruel and barbaric practice of horse slaughter throughout the United States, or to call for banning the export of horses or horse meat for human consumption.

With their allies in the meat industry, the AVMA is lobbying against passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S.311).

Horse slaughter is motivated by greed and indifference to American horses. Killer buyers pick up horses for small sums at slaughter, and resell them to the slaughterhouses where horsemeat is shipped off to Europe and Asia to satisfy gourmet diners.

Dr. Hammer and the AVMA should be protecting the welfare of these animals, not the interests of the meat industry.

Please sign our petition and tell Dr. Hammer that the AVMA is wrong.
Horse slaughter must be put down for good.

To: Dr. Hammer, President of the American Veterinarian Medical Association

Dear Dr. Hammer:

We disagree with you and the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), for refusing to denounce the cruel and barbaric practice of horse slaughter throughout the United States, or to call for banning the export of horses or horse meat for human consumption.

Horse slaughter is motivated by greed and indifference to American horses. Killer buyers were picking up horses for small sums at slaughter and reselling them to the slaughterhouses where horse meat as shipped off to Europe and Asia to satisfy gourmet diners.

The AVMA should be protecting the welfare of these animals, not the interests of the meat industry. It is wrong that the AVMA, with allies in the meat industry, are lobbying against passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S311).

For now, thanks to the Illinois legislature and the federal courts, the three slaughterhouses in Texas and Illinois have been closed. They could open up in other states, of course, at any time. And even worse, the killer buyers now are trying to haul their suffering acquisitions across the border to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. Yet the AVMA refuses to speak out against this needless suffering.

[Your Comments]

The AVMA's current position is wrong. We urge you to publicly denounce horse slaughtering throughout the United States and to call for banning the export of horse meat for human consumption. Horse slaughter must be put down for good.

Sincerely,

I would think the AVMA would have a high priority on our pets. Horses aren't raised for food; they aren't livestock. The AVMA should protect the rights of such beautiful domesticated animals.

Every one who's ever had the opportunity to be a friend with a horse will know that slaughtering a horse is no worse that what the nazi's did to the jews. An animal has to way to impact their own future. It lies in our hands, and why would we subject them to the terror that they endure while we ourselves wouldn't do so?

A veterinarian medical association should be looking out for the welfare of animals, not slaughtering them!

This is from the AVMA website: "Today, the American Veterinary Medical Association has more than 76,000 members. These professionals use their skills to care for the health and well being of humans, animals, and the environment." But if there's money in it, SCREW the animals and grab the dough!!! Stop the slaughter of horses... NOW!!

Totally barbaric. Horses are beautiful creatures who do not deserve to end their days in this inhumane way. This needs to be stopped NOW, internationally, not just the USA.

This is a betrayal of their medical oath. These horses are NOT all "old or lame" as they are likely to claim. Often, these are young, healthy horses that someone is simply tired of caring for. To say this is better than "letting horses starve" is BS. Those people should be humanely euthanizing or selling to another owner (NOT a slaughterhouse!!!!) if they cannot afford to keep the animal.

We treat horses like livestock when they have believed they are our companions. As we treat the innocent like this, then this will bleed down to how we treat our fellow man. Let's end this type of distrust now.
