Put Horse Slaughter Down for Good!

Target: Gregory Hammer, President of the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA)
Sponsored by: National Horse Protection League

© Sean Sauber

We think of veterinarians as gentle animal advocates, yet the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), and its president, Gregory Hammer, refuse to denounce the cruel and barbaric practice of horse slaughter throughout the United States, or to call for banning the export of horses or horse meat for human consumption.

With their allies in the meat industry, the AVMA is lobbying against passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S.311).

Horse slaughter is motivated by greed and indifference to American horses. Killer buyers pick up horses for small sums at slaughter, and resell them to the slaughterhouses where horsemeat is shipped off to Europe and Asia to satisfy gourmet diners.

Dr. Hammer and the AVMA should be protecting the welfare of these animals, not the interests of the meat industry.

Please sign our petition and tell Dr. Hammer that the AVMA is wrong.
Horse slaughter must be put down for good.

To: Dr. Hammer, President of the American Veterinarian Medical Association

Dear Dr. Hammer:

We disagree with you and the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), for refusing to denounce the cruel and barbaric practice of horse slaughter throughout the United States, or to call for banning the export of horses or horse meat for human consumption.

Horse slaughter is motivated by greed and indifference to American horses. Killer buyers were picking up horses for small sums at slaughter and reselling them to the slaughterhouses where horse meat as shipped off to Europe and Asia to satisfy gourmet diners.

The AVMA should be protecting the welfare of these animals, not the interests of the meat industry. It is wrong that the AVMA, with allies in the meat industry, are lobbying against passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S311).

For now, thanks to the Illinois legislature and the federal courts, the three slaughterhouses in Texas and Illinois have been closed. They could open up in other states, of course, at any time. And even worse, the killer buyers now are trying to haul their suffering acquisitions across the border to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. Yet the AVMA refuses to speak out against this needless suffering.

[Your Comments]

The AVMA's current position is wrong. We urge you to publicly denounce horse slaughtering throughout the United States and to call for banning the export of horse meat for human consumption. Horse slaughter must be put down for good.

Sincerely,

Horse slaughter is a shameful secret that many Americans have no knowledge about. No horse is safe from slaughter. Children's ponies, show horses, family horses, retired show horses, or horses from families who just can't afford them any longer are all at risk of being slaughtered for human consumption. Stolen horses also often end up at slaughter houses. Slaughter is an easy way for a horse thief to make a quick $300-700 on a stolen horse and the evidence is destroyed. 90% of horses slaughtered for human cosumption are young, healthy, sound horses who deserve a better life. Both the transport of horses to slaughter and the slaughter itself is inhumane. Equipment used in the transport of horses to slaughter is designed for cows. Horses often end up trampled and injured, even dead, while being transported 24 hours or more with no food, water, or rest. The equipment used to stun the horse before being slaughtered is also made for cows. Horses are often slaughtered while still consciously alive (2,500 or more horses met their fate this way last year alone). Please put a stop to this shameful secret....no animal deserves this horrible ending. Horses are an american icon...not meat to be put on some foreigner's table as a "delicacy".

I am perpetually amazed at the AVMA's worldly stand on horse slaughter! As an experienced Vet tech, horse owner, pet rescue owner and operater, groomer and other animal related work over the last 35 years,I am not naive of the internal workings and motives going on today! I once more lift up and send to you, the majority view of animal lovers all across this country and much of the world... Please turn away from the complicated propaganda, make a u turn, stand united and do what you KNOW to be the right thing........

Having worked in the veterinary field with both large and small animals for years, I have come to associate the AVMA with regulating humane veterinary practices and holding its members to the highest possible medical standards. It's a shameful practice for the US to allow the slaughter of non-livestock animals, many of whom are retired riding horses, pets, and horses who have been neglected or abandoned. It's even more shameful that the AVMA not only does not take steps to prevent it but even supports it. And lobbies the government to allow it to continue! This is no way to treat such sensitive creatures who are born and bred to be companion animals and workers for us. They deserve better and we the public demand better of the AVMA.

As a life-long horse lover & owner I want to say that if you can't afford to take care of your horse compassionately & humanely until its last breath, you can't afford a horse! It is a privilege to own a horse, not a right. They are the best, most loyal friends you'll ever have & to betray that in such a way is a travesty. We've all seen the tapes. There is nothing humane about horse slaughter. It is brutal, terrifying & painful. No animal deserves to die this way.

i have to say that we as americans used to believe horses to be beautiful, noble creatures but now, now look at us. we are killing them for other countries. horses are meant to be alive and here for our transportation, if gas prices keep rising, and entertainment, NOT TO BE EATEN!!!!
