Put Horse Slaughter Down for Good!

Target: Gregory Hammer, President of the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA)
Sponsored by: National Horse Protection League

© Sean Sauber

We think of veterinarians as gentle animal advocates, yet the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), and its president, Gregory Hammer, refuse to denounce the cruel and barbaric practice of horse slaughter throughout the United States, or to call for banning the export of horses or horse meat for human consumption.

With their allies in the meat industry, the AVMA is lobbying against passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S.311).

Horse slaughter is motivated by greed and indifference to American horses. Killer buyers pick up horses for small sums at slaughter, and resell them to the slaughterhouses where horsemeat is shipped off to Europe and Asia to satisfy gourmet diners.

Dr. Hammer and the AVMA should be protecting the welfare of these animals, not the interests of the meat industry.

Please sign our petition and tell Dr. Hammer that the AVMA is wrong.
Horse slaughter must be put down for good.

To: Dr. Hammer, President of the American Veterinarian Medical Association

Dear Dr. Hammer:

We disagree with you and the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), for refusing to denounce the cruel and barbaric practice of horse slaughter throughout the United States, or to call for banning the export of horses or horse meat for human consumption.

Horse slaughter is motivated by greed and indifference to American horses. Killer buyers were picking up horses for small sums at slaughter and reselling them to the slaughterhouses where horse meat as shipped off to Europe and Asia to satisfy gourmet diners.

The AVMA should be protecting the welfare of these animals, not the interests of the meat industry. It is wrong that the AVMA, with allies in the meat industry, are lobbying against passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S311).

For now, thanks to the Illinois legislature and the federal courts, the three slaughterhouses in Texas and Illinois have been closed. They could open up in other states, of course, at any time. And even worse, the killer buyers now are trying to haul their suffering acquisitions across the border to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. Yet the AVMA refuses to speak out against this needless suffering.

[Your Comments]

The AVMA's current position is wrong. We urge you to publicly denounce horse slaughtering throughout the United States and to call for banning the export of horse meat for human consumption. Horse slaughter must be put down for good.

Sincerely,

Horses are classified as companion animals in Illinois, not livestock. They are not used to being chuted into death chambers where they may be inhumanely "bolted." The issue is responsible horse ownership and re-homing, not monetarily rewarding irresponsible owners for disposal of their animals.

You hear the pro slaughter folks say horse slaughter is humane. In no way shape or form is slaughter humane euthanasia. One only has to educate themselves to know that this is the farthest things from the truth. The others who can not be swayed are the ones being paid to speak for these slaughter houses and those who represent them.Abolish horse slaughter in the U.S. and get the borders into Mexico and Canada closed and make people responsible for their animals and end these backyard breeders blood money intakes!

Horses are not disposable, please help us make it easier to euthanize our family pets and maybe if that was the least expensive thing less horses would end up in a slaughter pen in pain or injured. they like all out pets deserve a peaceful death, and you CAN help. Please support and help us.

I cannot understand how a veterinarian could possibly support the slaughter of horses, any more than they could support the slaughter of dogs, cats, or other companion animals. Please rethink your position.

It is appalling that the AVMA and the AAEP would take any position contrary to the humane welfare of any horse. The horsemeat indusrty is a disgusting, barbaric and highly inhumane business. It encourages overbreeding and irresponsible horse ownership. That any physician would support horse slaughter is more than contrary to the oath that they have taken...it is immoral, cruel and unsupportable from where I stand.

The AVMA ought to be working to make animal cruelty laws stronger instead of causing more cruelty. For shame.

You took an oath when you became a Veterinarian and that was to prevent animals from suffering. With all the facts regarding horse slaughter, I feel you owe it to each animal and person who takes their animal to you, to do the right thing and stand up against a practice that is disgusting brutal and totally uncalled for. Let the bills in Congress go for a vote, protect the animals that are paying your salary. Protect them because is is ethical. Enough is enough, remember your oath.
