Put Horse Slaughter Down for Good!

Target: Gregory Hammer, President of the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA)
Sponsored by: National Horse Protection League

© Sean Sauber

We think of veterinarians as gentle animal advocates, yet the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), and its president, Gregory Hammer, refuse to denounce the cruel and barbaric practice of horse slaughter throughout the United States, or to call for banning the export of horses or horse meat for human consumption.

With their allies in the meat industry, the AVMA is lobbying against passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S.311).

Horse slaughter is motivated by greed and indifference to American horses. Killer buyers pick up horses for small sums at slaughter, and resell them to the slaughterhouses where horsemeat is shipped off to Europe and Asia to satisfy gourmet diners.

Dr. Hammer and the AVMA should be protecting the welfare of these animals, not the interests of the meat industry.

Please sign our petition and tell Dr. Hammer that the AVMA is wrong.
Horse slaughter must be put down for good.

To: Dr. Hammer, President of the American Veterinarian Medical Association

Dear Dr. Hammer:

We disagree with you and the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), for refusing to denounce the cruel and barbaric practice of horse slaughter throughout the United States, or to call for banning the export of horses or horse meat for human consumption.

Horse slaughter is motivated by greed and indifference to American horses. Killer buyers were picking up horses for small sums at slaughter and reselling them to the slaughterhouses where horse meat as shipped off to Europe and Asia to satisfy gourmet diners.

The AVMA should be protecting the welfare of these animals, not the interests of the meat industry. It is wrong that the AVMA, with allies in the meat industry, are lobbying against passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S311).

For now, thanks to the Illinois legislature and the federal courts, the three slaughterhouses in Texas and Illinois have been closed. They could open up in other states, of course, at any time. And even worse, the killer buyers now are trying to haul their suffering acquisitions across the border to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. Yet the AVMA refuses to speak out against this needless suffering.

[Your Comments]

The AVMA's current position is wrong. We urge you to publicly denounce horse slaughtering throughout the United States and to call for banning the export of horse meat for human consumption. Horse slaughter must be put down for good.

Sincerely,

Honestly - why are we still even considering keeping this legal in any way whatsoever? It is time to stop the unnecessary slaughtering!!!

We now know horse slaughter is a business NOT a service for old or sick horses, so why are you supporting a business that creates such pain and agony for one of the top three pets in the U.S.? Should we now allow the countries who eat dogs and cats to come in and set up their slaughterhouses too? It's the same thing. Be careful what you support!

Do we slaughter our dogs and cats or do we put them down humanely?

SLAUGHTER IS CRUEL AND INHUMANE. BEING A VETERINARY YOU SHOULD REALIZE THIS. PLEASE HELP US PUT AN END TO THIS. WE NEED TO BREED FEWER HORSES AND ENDING THE SALE FOR SLAUGHTER WILL HELP.

Veterinarian's Oath Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health, the relief of animal suffering, the conservation of livestock resources, the promotion of public health and the advancement of medical knowledge. I will practice my profession conscientiously, with dignity and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics. I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence. Do these words mean anything to you, AVMA? Or are they just words that are recited to get that money-making D.V.M. degree? Veternarians know that any animal slaughter is wrong. Just plain WRONG. It seems to me that the AVMA is more concerned with how much money is to line their pockets than they are about compassion to an animal. Especially someones companion animal. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer and all eventually end up suffering. "God money's not looking for the cure. God money's not concerned with the sick amongst the pure. God money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised. God money's not one to choose. You know who you are."

you've got to be kidding me !! Someone actually considers horse meat gourmet dining ? The practice and the consumption should be stopped immediately. Clearly these are intelligent animals, seemingly more so than the individuals profiting from the slaughter and sale.

Enough! I have 4 animals and would never use a vet that advocates horse slaughter. Time for humans, including the AVMA, to step up and be responsible for our beautiful horses.

Horse owners must be educated in the responsibility of horse ownership. Horses, as well as all companion animals are not throw away items just because owners get tired of caring for them. They depend on us for their well-being and responsible care for the long haul. Please put the slaughter issue to rest, for good.

As a veterinarian, you took an oath to protect animals. Horse slaughter is inhumane and totally unnecessary. It is completely motivated by money. Please work to stop this cruel and inhumane practice.

Horses are the one animal that portraits dignity, charm, integrity, pride and beauty. These characteristics are nowhere to be detected in some human beings. We should learn from horses what respect and pride is about. What an undignified way to die.

As many have already said, there are "unwanted" horses due to irresponsible owners and breeders. After slaughter is banned, there will be a period of adjustment in the market, but supply and demand will make it unprofitable for people to needlessly breed too many horses. Please do the right thing.

I have many animals. When I go to the veterinarian, I talk to them about horse slaughter. Some do not know about horse slaughter (I inform them!). The rest, the vast majority of veterinarians, are in anger at the their the "CEO's" of the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), who are there to represent them. They are horrified and disgusted with the AVMA. They KNOW the AVMA's stand, pro-slaughter, is for the kick-back money. My trust is lost in your organization's, supposedly, being representative of all veterinarians. But most importantly, of all animals, esp. our American horses that you betray by supporting their torture, suffering, anguish, in transport to the slaughter house and the horror of their INHUMANE, barbaric slaughter. SHAME. Question? How does your "conscience" protect you?

Captive bolt is absolutely NOT a HUMANE way to end a horse's life, despite your propaganda. SHAME on you, AVMA, for catering to the agri-producer's fears that showing humanity toward horses will force more humane treatment of other food animals. Your position mis-informs the public, legitimizes cruelty, and encourages irresponsible breeding. (Pro-slaughter advocates refer to slaughter-bound horses as "culls," a fairly obvious reference to the practice of throwing s**t against the wall to see what sticks (the keepers) vs what falls (the culls).) THE VERY LEAST YOU COULD DO IS WORK TO FIND HONESTLY HUMANE and AFFORDABLE METHODS TO HELP OWNERS EUTHANIZE UNWANTED HORSES. THE NEXT LEAST THING IS TO SUPPORT THE BAN AGAINST SHIPPING U.S. HORSES OUT OF THE COUNTY FOR A SLAUGHTER EVEN WORSE THAN YOUR PURPORTED "HUMANE" CAPTIVE BOLT. OR,YOU COULD HAVE LOBBIED FOR LEGISLATION TO CREATE A HUMANE SLAUGHTER PROCESS FOR EQUINES...BUT YOU DIDN'T, and you won't. Shame, shame, shame.

There are no "unwanted" horses, just unresponable horse owners. Please remember this and that alot of slaughter bound horses are stolen or sent to slaughter under false pretences, "the good home" story. Our horses are taught to trust and perform for us, now its our turn to do something for them. We owe them this for all they do and stand for.

If veterinarians in support of horse slaughter were made to travel with just one horse to experience what its goes through from its moment of betrayal, transport to a distant slaughter horse and then its grisly death, how many would still support this barbaric practice?!~

It is time to issue in an equine-friendlier environment. The horse industry will be made stronger when horse people take better care of their "pets, livestock, commodities, tools of the trade" or whatever term you choose to you. End horse slaughter now and the horse industry will adjust and be made bigger and better.

The USA was founded by the English, so horses have been part of our history as companions, not livestock. As horse owners, we must treat these creatures with respect as our pets AND in retirement, not dispose of with a cash incentive when they are not convenient. I have seen too many trusting companions loaded into trailers on their way to slaughter.

The horse slaughter plants in the US have closed their doors. It is a dying business. The AVMA should take a stand to protect Americas horses from being shipped to Mexico and Canada to slaughter. Weak existing laws designed to protect horses are not effective. Horses must travel hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles in crowded trailers - without food or water for days at a time. This is serious neglect that cannot be swept under the rug. It must stop. The Canadian Horse Defense Coalition also has evidence of inhumane handling and slaughter practices at Natural Valley Foods in Saskatchewan. Please visit our website to view this evidence at www.defendhorsescanada.org.
