Put Horse Slaughter Down for Good!

Target: Gregory Hammer, President of the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA)
Sponsored by: National Horse Protection League

© Sean Sauber

We think of veterinarians as gentle animal advocates, yet the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), and its president, Gregory Hammer, refuse to denounce the cruel and barbaric practice of horse slaughter throughout the United States, or to call for banning the export of horses or horse meat for human consumption.

With their allies in the meat industry, the AVMA is lobbying against passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S.311).

Horse slaughter is motivated by greed and indifference to American horses. Killer buyers pick up horses for small sums at slaughter, and resell them to the slaughterhouses where horsemeat is shipped off to Europe and Asia to satisfy gourmet diners.

Dr. Hammer and the AVMA should be protecting the welfare of these animals, not the interests of the meat industry.

Please sign our petition and tell Dr. Hammer that the AVMA is wrong.
Horse slaughter must be put down for good.

To: Dr. Hammer, President of the American Veterinarian Medical Association

Dear Dr. Hammer:

We disagree with you and the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA), for refusing to denounce the cruel and barbaric practice of horse slaughter throughout the United States, or to call for banning the export of horses or horse meat for human consumption.

Horse slaughter is motivated by greed and indifference to American horses. Killer buyers were picking up horses for small sums at slaughter and reselling them to the slaughterhouses where horse meat as shipped off to Europe and Asia to satisfy gourmet diners.

The AVMA should be protecting the welfare of these animals, not the interests of the meat industry. It is wrong that the AVMA, with allies in the meat industry, are lobbying against passage of the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act (S311).

For now, thanks to the Illinois legislature and the federal courts, the three slaughterhouses in Texas and Illinois have been closed. They could open up in other states, of course, at any time. And even worse, the killer buyers now are trying to haul their suffering acquisitions across the border to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. Yet the AVMA refuses to speak out against this needless suffering.

[Your Comments]

The AVMA's current position is wrong. We urge you to publicly denounce horse slaughtering throughout the United States and to call for banning the export of horse meat for human consumption. Horse slaughter must be put down for good.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

The overwhelming majority of Americans wants the slaughter of American horses to end. The "unwanted horse" myth put forth to justify horse slaughter is just that: A MYTH that serves irresponsible owners and industries.

The AMVA should be honoring their oath to protect animals from suffering. Yet they do the complete opposite and allow our horses to suffer the barbaric practice of slaughter. Why just because they side with those greedy people who do not care what happens to the horses as long as they make a dollar. The AMVA keeps reiterating the same old words of unwanted and neglected horses. Records show that in California when slaughter was banned there that the incidences of unwanted horses and neglect did not increase. Also during recent years when the horse slaughter plants were operating in the USA horses had to be imported from Canada. So much for the theory of all those unwanted horses here. It is just so sickening that so many members of the AVMA do not care about the horses and have closed their minds and hearts.

Primum non nocere As a veterinarian, these words MUST apply to you... How does the inhumane practice of horse slaughter co-exist with that oath that most certainly applies also to veterinary medicine? First, Do No Harm

I am appalled that this act occurrs. There is a reason that the sl. houses have closed in this coutry. Its time to stop it at the gate not at the grave. Crack down on the racing industry, the main source of overbreeders for a perfet horse. AQHA? There are ways to handle the AMERICAN ICON, and everyone who does not openly support this ban on horse slaughter and transport to slaghter should be so ashamed of themselves. Start speaking for the horses who have much more to give than being an item on the dinner plate.

It is unconscionable that the AVMA--of all groups--is supporting and promoting the continued inhumane treatment of horses. Are we so sick a society that we promote the infliction of cruelty and brutality simply so some can make more money? The AVMA's current position is the unfortunate proof that we are. We need to change NOW. Please try to remember the original purpose of veterinary medicine--it was NOT to brutalize and abuse. Humane treatment of all animals is what veterinarians are supposed to be about. What happened? Please try to find your consciences and change your current position so that horse slaughter, including the transport of horses to Mexican and Canadian slaughterhouses, is stopped in this country.

China eats dogs and cats, yet we don't send them our unwanted pets for the dinner table so why horses?

Horse slaughter is NOT humane euthanasia -- it is torture and it is butchery. Step up to the plate and do the right thing -- help us abolish this inhumane practice for good.

Horses helped build this country; they run in the sport of kings and work on farms, riding and trail riding clubs and the list goes on. Americans do not eat horses. End this barbaric torture to these magnificent animals. End it once and for all!!

Horse slaughter is cruel and inhumane. I thought the AVMA was to save lives, not to end them unnecessarily and cruelly.

Horse slaughter has to be stopped...this is barbaric, brutal...and these are God's creatures...he created horses like he did man and woman...and you the vets took an oath to protect and heal all animals...and this includes horses.
# 329:

Anyone who would support the inhumane way in which our horses are being transported and then killed, should not have the right to practice Veterinary Medicine. Control the many, many births of horses - many more than there are "homes" - and you might have a more productive way to control populations.

Veterinarians - remember the OATH you took??? If not, read it AGAIN, and again, until you realize that allowing to send horses to slaughter is NOT "PROTECTING ANIMALS FROM SUFFERING"!!! If you want to help neglected, abused and starved animals; volunteer to HUMANELY euthanize them - SLAUGHTER IS NOT THE ANSWER!!!!

This process is not humane. And I believe you all know it. And look at what is happening during transport. As one eyewitness at a truck stop stated, "It looked like the horses were all beaten with a baseball bat". Do the right thing. You took an oath.

My veterinarian, who has five "Budweiser" horses, is pro-horse and anti-horse slaughter. So are 25 other vets in my Houston neighborhood, who have signed a statement supporting HR 503/S 311. They are enlightened, humane, honoring their oath, a credit to their profession, and in tune with the wishes of the vast majority of horse owners and Americans. The AVMA is not.

I believe the AVMA knows why they should help stop this horrible practice but unfortunately the "call of the cash" bulldozes right over their common sense and sense of morality. Shame, shame on them.

I can say with pride that my Vet is anti-slaughter. AVMA should also represent the true welfare of the horse and support anti-slaughter.

As a breeder I would not use any vet that wasn't against slaughter. My horses are not bred to be used to satisfy the appetites of Europe and Asia

No way has ever been found to humanely slaughter horses. The so-called captive bolt method is illegal under the Humane Slaughter Act because it does not render the animal insensate and unconscious during slaughter. AVMA members who support horse slaughter and the AVMA itself are, in turn, in violation of their veterinary oath (adopted by the AVMA in or around 1969) because they are not protecting the welfare of these animals. Methods used in Mexico do not even warrant consideration as to their humaneness.

As a lifetime owner of horses, I am disgusted with the stand the AVMA has regarding horses slaughter. I have already fired my small animal vet who is a member of the AVMA. I ask every vet who works on any of my animals if they are affiliated with the shady AVMA and if the answer is yes, they won't lay a hand on any of mine. Your support of horse slaughter is due to the financial gain you receive from pro-slaughter advocates and I find it reprehensible that your members chose money and greed over their duty to the professional oath they took to alleviate animal suffering and to be ethical towards the care of animals. The AVMA is a pathetic front for horse cruelty in return for money and needs to investigated and put out of business. Shame on you.
