Last Chance to Improve the Food and Farm Bill!
Target: U.S. CongressSponsored by: Union of Concerned Scientists
Congress decides every five years how our food will be produced when they vote on the Food and Farm Bill.
We all want healthful, tasty food, but the Food and Farm Bill should also support modern farming practices that do not harm the foundations of our food supply. Government policy needs to address issues like healthy soil, fresh water, and the effects of some farm practices on our health, like adding antibiotics to the feed of animals that are not sick leading to antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
The House and Senate are working right now to resolve the differences between the two versions of this bill they passed last year.
This is your chance to demand federal agricultural programs that are better for you and the planet. Sign the letter to your legislators today!

Nothing could be more important than to ensure healthy farming practices that protect and enhance the health of our topsoil and water. As the current food crisis demonstrates, everyone depends on the availability of not only sufficient quantity of food but also quality of food and water. The mineral content of produce is dependent on the health of the soil. Certain farming practices (chemical fertilizers, pesticides, etc) only deplete the mineral content of the soil more and will eventually pose a grave danger to the health of future generations. Please do all in your power to support and encourage healthy farming practices.

If the same amount of grain used to fill ONE SUV tank with ethanol can be used to feed ONE MAN for an entire YEAR, then we need to take a hard look at best use of dwindling resources. Industry now means WASTING our natural resources. It has caught up with us now. We need to change the way things work. If spending money at a yard sale is the only way to stimulate the economy (without outsourcing to China, etc.) then we need to begin producing again. Continuing to poison our land and water and air is a guarantee of our demise.

Please consider President Bush's Farm Bill. It is more rational and intelligent than the plan proposed by Pelosi. We need to take immediate action before the situation deteriorates to famine proportions. It is easy to say that that cannot happen here, but at the rate we are going, and the continuing of subsidizing wealthy farmers, we are diminishing our access to food suppllies.

Also, the farm bill should NOT subsidize Round-up ready crops. GMOs are damaging for us, for the environment, and for the future of food. Please- for my sake, your sake, and the sakes of all our children.
