Strengthen Protection of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem
Target:Vice Admiral Conrad Lautenbacher, U.S. Navy, (Ret.), Administrator, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Admin. Sponsored by:The Ocean Conservancy
A beautiful, remote string of islands, reefs and atolls lies some 120 nautical miles west of the main Hawaiian Islands. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI) encompass close to 70% of our country's coral reefs, including some of our most pristine shallow-water reefs. This ecosystem is an irreplaceable national treasure.
Endangered green sea turtles, the endangered Hawaiian monk seal, and a myriad of bird species rely heavily on the islands and surrounding waters for survival. But there are serious threats to this incredible ecosystem. Lobster and finfish fishing, proposed coral harvests, and marine debris all threaten the fragile island chain.
The federal government is now considering designating the area a National Marine Sanctuary. We need your help and comments today to ensure that the designation will include the strongest possible protections for these islands and their magnificent ecosystem.
Please sign the petition below and help ensure we leave a legacy of wild and healthy oceans!
We signed the “Strengthen Protection of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem” petition!

Coral reefs are the nursey of the oceans just as the rainforest is the breeding grounds for the land above. Just because we can't "see" it doesn't mean we can ignore it. Let's think before we act!

Our oceans have been used as waste dumps for far too long. Any step in the opposite direction is a good one.

The coral reefs, along with being one of the most beautiful natural creations, contain more than we could ever discover, especially when we are rapidly destroying them for selfish reasons!

Many of the islands of the world have been ruined by tourism, polution, and mining, logging, removing the live shells, etc. We support leaving thngs in their natural state so everyone, including the ecosystem can thrive. Our son was a Marine Engineer who worked for the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Research Institute (MBARI). Stuart Stratton was the ROV pilot and fabricator. Stuart could swim before he could walk and could dive off a board at 18 months. He attended college at Santa Barbara and was also a deep sea diver. Stuart was killed 10/19/01 in a Motorcycle accident while competing at Daytona.

Once the ocean ecosystem is destroyed a domino effect occurs: no one on earth is left untouched and we all suffer for the ignorance of a few greedy people.

We must be stewards of nature so that generations that come after us can enjoy the natural wonders we are so fortunate to experience.

This portion of the Hawai'ian Islands is a precious jewel. Would we stand by and let a gem be destroyed? Keep the remaining areas of beauty in the world; they are becoming few and far between.

I have been studying the coral reef and how important it is to so many species.
We can save a lot of them by protecting the reef. As with the forests there are a lot of the reefs already destroyed so it is especially important NOW!
