Canada: Renew Funding for Critical Arctic Climate Change Research

Climate change is one of the biggest threats facing the world right now and Arctic research is at the forefront of knowing the hows, whats and whens of climate change. The Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL) is located in Nunavut and does essential climate research for Canada.

However, it is looking at closure in the next year, as funding runs out. Currently, the government has no plans to reinstate funding to ensure that PEARL can keep monitoring the precarious situation in the Arctic.

This isn't the first time this has happened. In 2012, PEARL was 20 days away from closure when extreme public pressure helped secure more funding. Unless we let Trudeau and the Liberal government know, they will close this essential monitoring station.

Information coming from PEARL is essential to understanding the extent and impacts of climate change. Defunding research goes against Trudeau's commitment to taking climate change seriously. If we do not act soon, Canada could lose a huge amount of data that could help it prepare for the emergencies that will arise from climate change.
