Recycling needs a smart labelling system: You can get it!

Did you know: Recycling is the No. 1 thing we can do to simultaneously and dramatically improve the environment, for the economy, for sustainable manufacturing, and to prevent waste from going into the oceans? But it only works when people recycle right!

Unfortunately recycling hasn’t been working well in the U.S. Here’s why: Due to hundreds of thousands of different-looking labels on recycling bins throughout the country, people are confused, apathetic, and even skeptical about recycling. As a result, people are not able to recycle properly.

Confusion at the bin results in millions of tons of “garbage” being thrown in recycling bins every day, and that contamination cripples the economics of recycling and often makes the recycled materials unusable for manufacturers.

Good news—there’s a simple solution, and it’s working. The society-wide standardized labels on recycling bins are the No. 1 tool to help people recycle more and recycle right!

The standardized labels help improve recycling 50 to 100 percent. This simple fix has been deemed a “world changing solution” (Ashoka) and “one of the top environmental fixes taking root today” (N.Y. Times).

Ask your mayor to be part of the solution. When you complete this form, you’re asking mayors across the U.S. to join the “Let’s recycle right!” solution by displaying the standardized labels on recycling bins throughout their communities. You are helping to implement a simple solution that will speed up environmental progress and help prevent the valuable materials from going into oceans.
