Demand Justice for Kenya's Rape Survivors

During the extreme violence that happened after the Kenyan election in 2007-2008, over 900 women and girls were brutally raped. These women deserve justice.

These survivors have now been left alone, with no help, for more than eight years. Many struggle with health problems that they are in desperate need of assistance with. This is especially true for those who were infected with HIV by rapists, but are too poor to make the journey to get medication or food they can take the medication with.

Many of the women are also struggling with their mental health, contemplating suicide and feeling helpless. Due to the stigma that comes from being a rape survivor, these women are being rejected by their communities, abused by family members and having trouble even getting a birth certificate for the children they have birthed after being raped. This has resulted in the victims being unable to go to work or school, contributing to their poverty.

The Kenyan government, specifically President Uhuru Kenyatta, has said that it will help victims with the US equivalent of $9.8 million. But, after all this time, nothing has been done.

To ensure that the Kenyan government makes good on its promise to the women who survived this horrible violence, we need to bring as much international attention as possible to this injustice. With enough support, we can move the government to action.

Please take a stand for justice and for the lives, health and safety of Kenya’s women. Sign this important petition and urge President Uhuru Kenyatta to make good on his promise of medical and psychological help, assistance with work and school (such as travel to and from)  and support with basic living expenses such as food, housing, and other essential items.

Dear President Uhuru Kenyatta,

As you know, over 900 women and girls were brutally raped during the extreme violence that occurred after the Kenyan election in 2007-2008. These survivors are suffering from extreme conditions, including HIV, and many more physical and mental health conditions, including being suicidal. This has resulted in the survivors having trouble going to work and school, pushing them further into poverty. Because of stigma, these women are being treated horribly by their communities, including their families, and if a child came from the rape, their children are suffering from this ill treatment as well.

Recently, you promised to spend the equivalent of $9.8 million US dollars on the survivors. Please attend to their conditions immediately, and concentrate on helping them with their physical and mental health, their troubles with work and school, and basic living such as food, housing, and other essentials. It's been eight years -- the time is now.
