It’s time to change Ontario’s system of standardized student tests!

Join in calling for a move to random-sample tests to replace grade 3 and 6 EQAO tests.

We’re concerned that the provincial government’s push for improved provincial EQAO test scores is resulting in a skewed emphasis on literacy and numeracy to the detriment of other subjects. The government has underlined, for example, the importance of arts and physical education, but the intense focus on literacy and numeracy leaves insufficient time for these other subjects.

We want the best education possible for our students. We believe changing provincial tests from testing every grade 3 and 6 student to testing a random sample of Ontario students each year would free our classrooms and enable educators to provide a more balanced and enriching program.

Random-sample tests would allow the government to assess whether the Ontario curriculum and teaching strategies are effective without turning elementary schools into testing centres and making grade 3 and 6 students go through weeks of testing preparations for EQAO tests that don’t provide timely or truly helpful information for classroom teachers.

Other jurisdictions recognized as having top-performing school systems, like Finland, use random-sample tests rather than test every student. It’s time for Ontario to catch up.
