End the Occupation of Palestinian Territory

For the past 50 years, world leaders have stood by and allowed Israel cement its illegal occupation of the West Bank. Over the last 10 years they have also largely ignored the blockade of Gaza, and the devastating impact it’s having on living conditions there.

These tragic milestones signal the need for intensified efforts to end the abuse of human rights and international law that stem from Israel’s control of Palestinian territory, and to ultimately realise the self-determination of the Palestinian people.

Take action by signing Trócaire’s petition to Ireland’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, urging the Irish Government to help end the occupation. We will hand over the petition to the Minister in late 2017.

I call on the Irish Government to lead by example in efforts to end decades of conflict and human rights abuse, and to act in solidarity with Palestinian and Israeli activists who seek a peaceful end to the occupation of Palestinian territory. In particular, I urge the Irish Government to:

  • Formally recognise the State of Palestine as part of its commitment in the Programme for Government of the 32nd Dáil

  • Call on the Israeli authorities to end the blockade on Gaza, allow unfettered humanitarian access, and encourage economic development for its 1.8 million residents.

  • Call on the Israeli authorities to end the intimidation and forced displacement of Palestinians, along with the demolition of their homes and annexation of land.

  • Actively discourage Irish companies and funds from having investments and commercial links with illegal Israeli settlements.

  • Seek an EU ban on trade and investment with illegal Israeli settlements.

With these actions, Ireland can help build a just peace in the region based on respect for human rights, international law and the dignity of all. The security of both Israelis and Palestinians is dependent on such a reality.

Additional information: Trócaire has been working in Israel and Palestine since 2002. We work with both Israeli and Palestinian partners committed to bringing peace and justice to all people in the region.
