DEMAND NORWAY STOP MASS SLAUGHTER OF ITS ENDANGERED WOLF POPULATION

"THE WOLF IS RED-LISTED AS CRITICALLY ENDANGERED IN NORWAY TODAY"
(Taken from facts published June 1st, 2016 by the Norwegian Environment Agency)

Norway's wolf population is almost extinct, and last winter, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research estimated that only 65 to 68 wolves still exist in the wild.

But this September, the Norwegian government authorized hunters to kill off 47 of the country's endangered wolves – including inside designated "wolf zones."

Hunting is a hugely popular sport in Norway, and more than 200,000 hunters are registered in the country. Last year, more than 11,000 people applied for special licenses to shoot and kill just 16 wolves. This year's hunt would be even larger, and would be the biggest government-sanctioned wolf culling since 1911. According to Nina Jensen, chief executive of WWF in Norway, "This is mass slaughter. We have not seen anything like this in a hundred years."

Norwegian authorities claim this wolf-hunt is intended to protect local farmers' sheep from predators. But environmental groups say wolves account for a very small percentage of sheep killings, and this response is wildly out of proportion. According to the founder of the Predator Alliance Norway, "the lack of a scientific and professional approach is obvious."

If all 47 animals are shot, Norway will have lost more than two-thirds of its wolf population. Only about 20 wolves would be left in the wild. We cannot stand by and watch as hunters destroy the already-tiny wolf population in Norway.

Demand that Norway stop the slaughter IMMEDIATELY. Norway should be ashamed!

This move is understandably condemned by outraged environmental groups.

Dear Petition Recipients

It is with outrage that we submit our petition to STOP THE AUTHORISED ‘MASS SLAUGHTER’ OF NORWAY'S ENDANGERED WOLF POPULATION’.

We feel that this matter warrants urgent attention and are respectfully seeking your assistance in this matter.

‘THE WOLF IS RED-LISTED AS CRITICALLY ENDANGERED IN NORWAY TODAY’.

The original Scandinavian wolf population died out during the 1960s. The wolvestoday are descended from a small number of animals from the Finnish-Russian population that dispersed as far as southern Scandinavia in the 1980s and 1990s.

Only 65-68 wolves were registered last winter in Norway. It is expected that their numbers will have increased after the birth of an unknown number of pups in April and May and approximately 25 wolves were observed near the border neighbouring Sweden last winter.

“According to environmental groups, the number of wolves the government plans to kill this year is greater than in any year since 1911.”

“Shooting 70% of the wolf population is not worthy of a nation claiming to be championing environmental causes. People all over the country, and outside its borders, are now reacting.”

It is said the losses to farmers from wolves had been minimal, and pointed to settlements by the Norwegian parliament in 2004 and 2011 that stipulated populations of carnivores must be allowed to co-exist with livestock.

Please listen to the views expressed in support of this petition and immediately stop this massacre from going ahead. Please continue to be a leader in wildlife policy.

Thank you for your time.

Yours Sincerely

Concerned supporters for the endangered wolves
