STOP the changes to Durham Road, Low Fell!!

Quality Transport Corridor phase 4 proposal is a nightmare for residents and those who use the Durham Road route to travel to and from work.  In addition the knock on effect for the surrounding minor roads could be catastrophic as well as dangerous!   For those who aren't aware, there is a proposal by Gateshead Council to put traffic calming measures in place on Durham Road in Low Fell which would put bus lanes in place of current parking areas and close access from some side roads onto Durham Road itself.  There have been similar proposals before that have been beaten by the residents so we need to get as much support as possible - please sign if you agree these proposals can't go ahead!!  Key points to consider are:

  • None of the changes would help prevent the bottle neck through Low Fell and it would a pointless waste of money with a huge upheaval to residents and road users from neighbouring areas
  • Losing the parking for Durham Road residents will mean back lanes become congested, garages will be blocked and access will become restricted
  • The closure of Musgrave and Denewell junctions will push traffic onto other minor roads increasing the problems there
  • Joicey Road is a huge headache already because of parked cars on both sides; this will only make things worse
  • The left turn lane will push volumes of traffic up Beaconsfield Road which is where primary school children cross the road on the way to and from school and there isn't always a traffic crossing patrol there
  • Double yellow lines all the way down Durham Road instead of any parking will bring speeding buses close to houses and footpaths where there are often pedestrians at night who will have come out of the pubs and restaurants
  • The dental practice on Durham Road will have its business affected

The residents of Low Fell DO NOT WANT the traffic calming measures you propose in Durham Road QTC Phase 4.

We have endured plan after plan to "fix" Durham Road but none actually address the bottle neck at the main High Street and the plans this time will just cause real problems for residents in terms of parking, access and safety.  Please, spend the money on something that is actually needed and that will have a positive rather than a negative effect on Low Fell residents.
