Since President Trump took office on January 20, 2017, the US government has rapidly taken actions that weaken human rights protections.
- A ban has been placed on entry to the US from countries with Muslim-majority populations.
- Orders have been given to build a wall along the Mexican border.
- The Dakota Access pipeline, which will violate the rights of Indigenous peoples, has received the go ahead.
- The 'global gag rule' decreasing women's access to sexual and health information and services abroad has been re-instated and funding for programs to help prevent violence against women have been cut.
And the list goes on.
Tell President Trump that he must uphold protections for human rights defenders, respect and protect the rights of Indigenous peoples, including those peacefully advocating for their rights, and protect the rights of people fleeing conflict and crisis by not turning his back on refugees.
Call on him to support and protect women's human rights in the US and around the world by working to end violence against women and expand access to sexual and reproductive rights, information and health services.
Urge him to halt the sale of weapons to governments that commit human rights abuses and close Guantánamo. Finally, call on him to unequivocally renounce torture.
Together we are standing against a Muslim registry, a wall along the Mexican border, and shutting down refugee aid programs. We are standing up for human rights defenders, and the human rights of all—including women, people of color, people with disabilities, LGBTI people, and activists.
To President Trump we say: every day in office, every choice you make will define your legacy. You can choose to leave the world a better place or one in which hatred, fear and discrimination grow stronger. We urge you to renounce hate and choose human rights.
Dear President Trump,
I urge you to make human rights — rights that every person, everywhere in the world has regardless of where in the world they live, who they are, what they believe in, how they vote, or their immigration status — a priority in your administration.
I call on you to:
• resume refugee resettlement to the United States, and refrain from further actions that do not meet international legal norms on refugee protection including non-discrimination on the grounds of religion or nationality.
• protect the health and sexual and reproductive rights of women worldwide
• oppose the use of torture in all circumstances
• respect the rights of Indigenous peoples to free, prior and informed consent in projects that affect their livelihood and way of life
• uphold the right to peaceful protest and protect human rights defenders from harm
• ensure human rights protections are central to agreements on trade
