10,000 more police in England and Wales now!

Momentum logo Since 2010, the number of police officers in England and Wales has dropped by almost 20,000. Although the Conservatives pledged to protect police budgets in real terms in 2015, this came off the back of five years of deep cuts amounting to 18% in real terms.

Numbers of Special Constables and Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) who patrol the streets, have also fallen by 7% and 11% respectively in the last year alone.

In 2015 at The Police Federation conference, a Manchester senior police officer warned then Home Secretary Theresa May that the cuts she was implementing would lead to a threat to our national security - i.e. terror attacks. You can watch the video of that by clicking here. Theresa May told the officer he was scaremongering.

After the devastating terrorist attack in Manchester a couple of weeks ago, the Prime Minister was forced to deploy the armed forces to the streets because the police are now unable to keep us safe without their help, such is the impact of her budget cuts. Last night in London Bridge, the police showed how necessary keeping police on our streets are to our safety.

The Labour Party has pledged to fund 10,000 additional police officers if they are elected this week.
