Demand Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise, Accor Hotels and Sofitel stop horse-drawn carriage tours

Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Disney Cruise Line, Accor Hotels and Sofitel sell and/or promote horse-drawn carriage tours in Cartagena, Colombia. We ask them to sever ties with the coachmen and businesses that are torturing and working our horses to death.
Many cities around the world have already banned horse-drawn carriages. Why support this cruelty in Colombia? There are many other means of city sightseeing.
Cartagena has allowed this cruel and dangerous tourist trap for decades and these companies are complicit with irresponsible tourism. Coachmen have been filmed physically attacking, shouting death threats and taunts at anyone who dares express concern for these unfortunate horses.
The list of accidents involving horse-drawn carriages in this city grows, and horses continue to endure pain and suffering because of this outdated practice. The only way to end this cruelty is to ban it permanently and give these horses the freedom that they deserve. A ban will only be possible if tour operators stop promoting this shameful activity.
On the 21st of April 2014 a horse collapsed while pulling a carriage with four tourists. (See photo).
A similar incident happened on the 2nd of July. A severely malnourished and dehydrated horse fell while pulling a carriage with five tourists.
On the 1st of September another horse died of collapsed lungs and cardiac arrest due to exhaustion.
On the 6th of September another horse was seriously injured.
Three more cases were reported at the end of November when two horses fell due to exhaustion and defective horseshoes and in another case a tourist confronted a coachman when his carriage was occupied by SEVEN people.
Three more cases were reported during the second week of January 2016. But, unfortunately, most incidents are not reported due to the coachmen's death threats to activists. It has happened when activists or tourists have tried to film the abuse.
Forcing horses to pull such heavy loads is not romantic—it’s cruel. They are subjected to very long journeys from the outskirts to the city center and then forced to toil day and night in a noisy environment and with no food or water in extreme heat. They develop debilitating leg problems and open wounds and lacerations. Some horses are so malnourished that their bones protrude and they are forced to work when injured or sick. After the exhausting work they are unable to rest as they are confined to filthy and unlicensed stables plagued by insects attracted to their feces and urine. Some have no horseshoes or have defective ones that cause them great pain.
They endure abuse as for this heavy work they need adequate nourishment and veterinary care but the coachmen deny them the minimum necessities.
Horses are dropping dead from heatstroke, malnutrition and dehydration after working in scorching summer heat and humidity. No city can provide a humane environment for a carriage horse, especially a city like Cartagena.
Local officials rarely monitor horse-drawn carriages in order to ensure that horses are not being overworked and that operators are following regulations.
When horses grow too old, tired, or ill they are left to die in the garbage dumps where they spend the time they are not pulling carriages on the streets.

Muchas ciudades del mundo han prohibido los coches halados por caballos. Por qué apoyar esta crueldad en Colombia? Hay muchas otras maneras de recorrer una ciudad.
Cartagena ha permitido esta cruel y peligrosa trampa turística por décadas y estas empresas son cómplices del turismo irresponsable. Hay filmaciones de cocheros agrediendo físicamente y gritando amenazas de muerte e insultos a toda persona que se atreva a expresar preocupación por estos desafortunados caballos.
La lista de accidentes que involucra coches halados por caballos en esta ciudad crece y los caballos siguen sufriendo con esta práctica pasada de moda. La única manera de acabar con esta crueldad es prohibirla permanentemente y darle a estos caballos la libertad que merecen. La prohibición sólo será posible si los operadores de turismo dejan de promocionar esta vergonzosa actividad.

Un incidente similar sucedió el 2 de julio. Un caballo gravemente desnutrido y deshidratado cayó cuando halaba un coche con cinco turistas.
El 1 de septiembre otro caballo murió con pulmones colapsados y paro cardíaco debido al extremo cansancio.
El 6 de septiembre otro caballo resultó gravemente herido.
Tres casos más fueron reportados a finales de noviembre cuando dos caballos cayeron debido al cansancio y herraduras defectuosas. Y en otro caso una turista confrontó a un cochero que transportaba a SIETE personas en el carruaje.
Hubo tres casos más durante la segunda semana de enero de 2016. Desafortunadamente la mayoría de los incidents no son reportados debido a las amenazas de muerte de los cocheros a los defensores de animales. Esto ha sucedido cuando los activistas o turistas han intentado filmar el abuso.
No es romántico forzar caballos a halar semejantes cargas tan pesadas, es cruel. Son sometidos a recorridos muy largos desde las afueras de la ciudad hasta el centro y luego obligados a trabajar día y noche en un ambiente ruidoso, en el calor extremo y sin alimento ni agua. Sufren debilitamiento de sus patas y heridas abiertas o laceraciones. Algunos caballos están tan desnutridos que sus huesos son visibles y son forzados a trabajar mientras están heridos o enfermos. Luego del trabajo exhaustivo no pueden descansar ya que están confinados a permanecer en basureros plagados de insectos atraídos por sus heces y orina. Algunos no tienen herraduras o las que tienen son defectuosas lo cual les causa excesivo dolor.
Aguantan el abuso del trabajo pesado necesitando nutrición adecuada y tratamiento veterinario pero los cocheros les niegan sus necesidades mínimas.
Estos caballos mueren de insolación, desnutrición y deshidratación trabajando en un clima excesivamente caliente y húmedo. Ninguna ciudad puede brindar un ambiente humano a un caballo cochero, mucho menos Cartagena.
Las autoridades locales raramente monitorean estos carruajes para asegurarse de que los caballos no trabajen excesivamente y que los operadores sigan las regulaciones.
Cuando los caballos están demasiado viejos, cansados o enfermos son abandonados a su suerte en los basureros donde pasan el tiempo que no están recorriendo la ciudad.
