Pleasant, SC is the Town's largest school and has over 3200 students, and further, whereas, enabling students to reach the school by bicycle would reduce the costs for School Bus transportation, lower carbon emissions from the use of fossil fuels and promote exercise
We the undersigned students, staff and friends of Wando High School call upon the Charleston County School District, Town of Mt. Pleasant, Charleston County, the SC Dept. of Transportation and the United States Government to commit to making sure that all road projects leading to the school include appropriate lanes or trials for bicycles and that existing roads have such facilities added at the earliest practical time.

On October 16, 2009, 16 cyclists, including six candidates for Town Council, several students from Wando High School and some experienced road cyclists bicycled 13 miles from the BI-LO Supermarket on Shelmore Blvd. in Mt. Pleasant to Wando High School. As part of this effort, a petition was posted online in support of better bicycle access to Wando High School in Mt. Pleasant. Many of the people signing made it clear that schools across the state should have safe access by bicycle availabe. Attached are their responsed to the following petition.
