Ask the Government of Madagascar to Take Urgent Action to Save the Rainforests from Destruction

A massive sapphire rush is threatening to destroy the rainforests of Madagascar, according to a report in theguardian.com.

The influx of gem hunters has destroyed a large protected area, with miners cutting down thousands of acres of forest that is home to more than 2,000 plant species found nowhere else on earth, including 14 endangered species of lemur.

As the report states, "The island nation is renowned for its biodiversity, and the protected forests in the eastern corridor are one of Madagascar's most precious resources, according to the World Bank."

Conservationists have called for a military intervention, similar to when the government sent in the army during a smaller rush in 2012.
