Protect the boreal forest on the Eastside of Lake Winnipeg

Help Preserve the Eastside of Lake Winnipeg

Target:
Hugh McFadyen, Leader of the Official Opposition in Manitoba
Sponsored by:
The government of Manitoba made a recent decision not to construct a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) hydroelectric transmission line in the last remaining large intact boreal forest on the Eastside of Lake Winnipeg, located in Manitoba, Canada.

This area is remote and populated by several First Nation communities, who still practice, for a large part, their traditional harvesting activities that are protected under the Canadian Consitution.

In addition, a 4.3 million hectare region on the Eastside of Lake Winnipeg is now being proposed, and supported by four First Nation communities in the region, as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site proposed for the Eastside of Lake Winnipeg would protect the habitat of the last remaining herds of endangered Woodland Caribou in Manitoba from large-scale resource extraction activities.

The Official Opposition Party in Manitoba has undertaken a campaign to get the government of Manitoba to reverse its decision with respect to not constructing a HVDC hydro transmission line down the eastside of Lake Winnipeg.

We are asking the global community to show its support for the government of Manitoba decision to not proceed with the construction of a HVDC transmission hydro line down the eastside of Lake Winnipeg and protect and preserve the eastside of Lake Winnipeg by proposing to create a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the region.

We the undersigned, support the decision by the government of Manitoba not to construct a HVDC hydro transmission line down the Eastside of Lake Winnipeg.

We believe this decision by the government of Manitoba will help to protect the constitutional rights of Indigenous People living in the region, allowing them to practice their traditional harvesting activities.

In addition, we fully support the efforts by the government of Manitoba and the effected First Nation communities to seek the nomination of a 4.3 million hectare area on the Eastside of Lake Winnipeg as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in one of the last remaining large intact areas of the boreal forest in Canada.

It is extremely important to further study positives and negatives for every option available. Thorough consultation with the residents in and around surrounding area, as well as with environmentalists & businesses. However, I do agree that building a north-south power line would be more environmentally friendly, and overall more efficient.

We must find ways to reduce our energy consumption. Short sighted thinking and limited comprehension of our connection to the earth is unacceptable in this time of human history. I am furious that any person in a position of trust would seek to carry out tampering with our boreal forest. The NDP have not gone far enough in their plans to find alternate ways to construct the power lines. To find out that the Mr. McFAyden is trying to reduce their limited protection even further is very distressing.

I support the petition because, as an ecologist, I have studied, togethter with my students, parts of the area in question. Our studies convince me that large tracts of this very fragile boreal ecosystem, with all its biotic diversity, should be preserved intact for posterity. Jennifer Shay OC, PhD

We need to protect SOME areas of land and not allow any construction. The decision the government made was one where they were finally putting the environment First, for once. If we did more to discourage energy consumption, we wouldn't need another hydro dam. They made their decision for a reason so let it be.

In this case the health of our environment trumps cost. Saving our environment, hence our health, is more important than saving money. Money can't buy health but intelligent practices can help before it's too late.

Please try to take a leadership role in preserving this area. Once this area is violated it is near impossible to undo the damage. Keep it as part of our own pristine natural resource for future generations.

Doesn't Lake Winnipeg have enough to deal with without further fragmenting its last track of viable habitat? By saving the forests, it can also help improve water quality.

We must work diligently to attain World Heritage status for the east side of Lake Winnipeg to stop FOREVER the clamour to pass the Hydro lines down that side of the lake.

we need to make responsible decisions regarding the "mother earth" without taking responsibility we will not be walking upon "her" for very long. There are very good reasons why some responsible persons create protected lands... we have future generations to think about...

Mr. Mcfadyen, As a resident of Manitoba, a regular camper in the Lake Winnipeg region, a concerned and consciencious citizen, a tax-payer, an eligable voter and citizen of Canada I am asking you not to reverse the decision in regards to the Eastern shore of Lake Winnipeg. The Woodland Caribou and the First Nations People living on this land have a right to live and be safe in their homes and environment. The HDVC hydro transmission line jeopardises this and should NOT be allowed to proceed. This area should be designated a UNESCO World Heritage site or at least left intact for the people and animals that depend on it.

A decision that destroys the pristine boreal forest cannot be undone. We must think beyond dollars and cents here. However, if we lose power sales due to going down the east side, the west side may not be the less costly option.
