THOSE WITH DISABILITIES CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE COMMUNITY! URGE THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES TO REINSTATE RICHARD LEWIS AS AN ADJUNCT TUTOR AT THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE OF BALTIMORE COUNTY! A stellar example of patience and persistence, Richard Lewis tutored Computer Graphic students at The Community College of Baltimore County Catonsville from September 1999 to January 2002. For his hard work and dedication, Richard received accolades and admiration from students and faculty alike. He seemed like a man who was going places and triumphing over his disability. But...Richard asked for reasonable accommodations which would have cost the college nothing - yet was refused for no reason. To make matters worse, Richard was forced to resign due to hostile work environment - even though he was consistently the most requested tutor and carried the largest tutoring load in the tutorial center. You can stop this injustice by contacting the The Community College of Baltimore County Board of Trustees to reinstate Richard in his tutoring position now! Stand up for disability rights!

Starting in the Fall semester of 1995, Richard Lewis worked in both the Macintosh computer lab and the PC lab tutoring students. Richard progressed to working in the tutorial center and achieving an Adjunct contract as adjunct tutor/database specialist, tutoring students in the computer labs, both plat forms, PC and Macintosh. Richard took on administrative duties. These duties consisted of: Creating Interrelational Databases for the tutorial center and testing center. Richard provided technical support for the tutorial center. He managed the scheduler. He provided statistical reports. To view Richard's job performance go to Reinstate Richard Lewis Richard also accomplished the following:
* Richard Lewis created an AppleScript to maintain the computers as a student aide. Professor Drees documents this in her letter of reference. * Richard Lewis served as an adjunct instructor for  Continuing Education classes, Advanced Photoshop, and a Introduction to QuarkXPress course, as well as a 3-credit Introduction to Computer Graphics course. * Richard Lewis created an interrelational databases in Access and gave a demonstration to the coordinator of the tutorial center on creating interrelational databases. * During Richard Lewis's employment in the tutorial center, Richard Lewis instructed 135 students, Richard was the top tutor during his tenure, 30.63% of the entire tutorial center, 1202 sessions.
In sum: * Richard Lewis asserted his rights to be paid for work rendered. * Richard Lewis requested reasonable accommodations under the ADA that were denied. These accommodations, such as the use of a tape recorder, would have cost the college $0.00.
Please understand that Richard's greatest gift to others is patience, such that he is able to go over a specific discipline as many times as necessary.
Based on Richard's capabilities, and the many fine recommendations which accompany his work it is time to reinstate Richard Lewis as an Adjunct Tutor at CCBC The Community College of Baltimore County!

I believe that Richard Lewis and all those with disabilities deserve fair and just treatment. They should be given the same opportunities as everyone not disabled. Proper accommodations could've been made for him as he has stated and he was refused, even treated like a piece of dirt. Please make allowances for those who need it. Thank you

I know for a fact that people with disabilities can be of service to the community and if they choose so should be able to do so. I see no difference in it and I think it's great that they want to ! Give them a chance and let them show you what they can do.

I think Richard Lewis is an asset to The Community College of Baltimore County. Giving students the opportunity to interact with disabled people on a first hand basis is an important way to teach empathy and tolerance. Furthermore, someone with Mr. Lewis' background and dedication sets and example for students to aspire to....regardless of whether they are disabled on not. To refuse reasonable requests to accomidate his disablity sends the message that The Community College of Baltimore County does not value the contributions of people with disabilities. I urge you to consider these points.

I am a strong supporter for the ADA. Mr. Lewis has given the best one can give to the children of tommorrow's leadership. He is and remains a very admired and respected teacher by students as well faculty members over the years. Please reinstate Mr. Lewis. His focus and dedication for his job speaks for itself. The board would lose both face and respect in the community of educators if they do not reinstate Mr. Lewis.

Richard Lewis is entitled to a fair and just reinstatement of his employment under the "Universal Declaration of Human Rights" (1948-1998) Adopted and proclaimed by General Assembly resolution 217 A (III) of 10 December 1948; Article 10. Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.

As a man of high learning, with a PhD, and my own share of disabilities I can only assume that the action of dismissing Mr Lewis was a mishap or a bad judgement of the moment, and having calmed down and getting back to reason and sense of social accountability, the Board will take a decision to fully reinstate Richard Lewis and be morally strong enough to aplologize sincerely thereby healing the would inflicted upon him. That would be the right and dignifying action.

Most definite they can - my brother is "handicaped" - to me he is a person with extra ordinary gifts! He is working and a full member of his comnity. In fact I would say that people with disabilities are a god sent messenger about humanity and human vulnerability. It could happen to you today - tomorrow - never - think about that

Open your eyes to a star - a bright shining light who encourages those who shy away from limelight because of personal skepticism to stand forth and be recognized! Are you afraid of this? or worse, jealous? Get over it! Let him shine!
