Ban the Piercing Gun in Ohio (OH residents only)

Lets get the health department in OH to ban ear piercing guns. This device is unhygienic, inaccurate, and above all dangerous. People MUST be made aware of the risks. (OH residents only)
Lets get the health department in OH to ban ear piercing guns. This device is unhygienic, inaccurate, and above all dangerous. People MUST be made aware of the risks. (OH residents only)
We the undersigned would like you to change the laws regarding piercing guns in the state of Ohio.
We would like Ohio to ban the use of these dangerous and unhygienic devices.
This device is unhygienic, inaccurate, and above all dangerous. People MUST be made aware of the risks.  As is now well known, the Hepatitis virus can live for extended periods of time on inanimate surfaces, and could be harbored within a piercing gun for several weeks or more. Hepatitis and common staph infections, which could be found on such surfaces, constitute a serious public health threat if they are introduced into even one reusable piercing gun. Ear piercing guns can not be properly sterilized and an alcohol wipe or spray does not sterilize the gun.  For more information please visit: http://www.norwalktattoo.com/piercinggun.htm http://www.akrontattoos.com/Pguns.html
Thank You for taking the time to read our petition, we know as someone concerned about public health that you will, no doubt, act on it.

Ear piercing with a gun couldn't be more unsanitary unless of course it were performed in the highly unsanitary WalMart restroom!

My family has been in the peircing/tattoo industry for many years and my wife also is a profesinal body peircer and knowing what I do abought bloodbourne pathogens and cross contamination I belive it is in the best interest of the community to ban these guns they are not being autoclaved and thus the chance of infection and desiese are very high.

it's quite humorous that parents of children are so adamant about having good doctors or nurses work on their children, but will allow a 16 year old girl at the mall puncture their childs ears with dirty materials. =/ and besides that, why would you want to have something used on your body that was originally used to tag cows?

piercing guns r bad becaus of the type of jewerly that is put into the piercing, it doesnt allow the wound to brath and that makes it easer for infections to start.

Ban the gun, why would you let someone use an unsterilized instrument to pierce your skin and risk infection and disease?

I have worked in a tattoo shop and a hospital before and I know that to this day that proper precautions are needed to keep people safe and healthy. I know for a fact that "piercing guns" are not only unhealthy but also dangerous to use on people. Not only does it cause infections because they are not cleaned properly, but it also used in a unclean environment. It is dangerous to pierce with a "piercing gun" when they are used to pierce in cartalage, the chances of breaking the cartalage is fairly high and when it happens it is not repairable. It causes the ear to fold over and it can not be fixed. There are too many bacterias going around these days for people NOT to take the right precautions to do piercings. THINK ABOUT IT, WOULD YOU GO TO HAVE SURGERY OR ANY THING ELSE THAT MAY GET DONE THAT MAY BLEED AT A JEWELRY STORE??????? That is why Tattoo shops are required to act as if it was a doctors office and to be clean and sterilize equipment as a doctors office does. NO MORE PIERCING GUNS PLEASE !!!! KEEP IT SAFE!!!!!

These things are dangerous! And the people handling them are incompetent. The health department regulates everything else to the enth degree, but lets this go on all over the state, causing infection and raising the possibilities of blood born diseases spreading. Please get rid of these things and make people go to trained professionals with Red Cross certifications. Thank you

Piercings guns suck. They damage the tissue in the ears and speaking from personal experince are very painful and i have always gotten infected after being pierced with a gun. The last ear piercing i got with a needle was much less painful and the healing process was much quicker

Piercing guns are atrocious. I've only had bad encounters with them. My friends had only had bad encounter with them. They are outdated and cause undue trauma to body tissue. Please consider banning this practice, for the health and safety of people who wouldn't know any better!

I beleive the piercing gun should be banned not only b/c of the inexpierenced and/or untrained properly person(s) doing the piercing, the guns are not sanatized properly, and also from personal expiernce wehn i had gotten my 3rd ear piercing, the lady that did it placed the gun on my ear and pushed the trigger, then the gun was stuck, it took her about 5 mintues to get it off, if this would of happened to my child i would of been so missed, so i'm going to take my child to a piercing parlor when she is older so i know a professional is doing it and therefore i wont have to worry about that or any ear infection. so please bann the piercing gun!!!

i am a body piercer at perfectly pierced body studio in toledo.i've been waiting years for some one to take the first step in banning these infection causing guns.there are so many reasons that they should be banned.1...they are made of plastic and are there for not able to be autoclaved. 2...the so called pierces using them are untrained in so many important aspects of proper tecnique, cleaning and after care. 3...there is little regulation of the places in which you may have this done or purchase them and do it your self. 4...as a licenced and certified professional i have seen first hand the damage these guns do to people.everything from minor infections to mutilation that requires sugery to correct. 5..the jewelry used is "standard"meaning one size fits all.that should not be the case however.i am sure your earlobe is not exactly like mine just as your waist is not exactly like mine.if i can have a pair of jeans that fit my body type shouldn't i also have jewelry that fits my ear properly? these are really only a few of the reasons that i belive the vile piercing guns should be banned.i would be too happy to elaborate further. If you have any questions regarding my training or experience plase contact me via my e-mail address.sincerly,Sara Schoch.

Guns are the cause of many infections. Also, the health department doesn't have to check the places in the mall that pierces. They DO check the tattoo/piercing studio, however, to make sure the environment is safe and clean. Girls trained for 2 weeks with a dirty piercing gun have NO place going near anyone's body parts. LEAVE IT TO THE PROFESSIONALS!

The first concern when it comes to piercing is sterilization. Any kind of procedure which involves contact with blood or bodily fluids requires strict adherence to cross-contamination prevention. Piercing guns are usually made with plastic and cannot be sterilized in an autoclave. Sure, they wipe it with alcohol or antiseptic in between uses, but how sterile is that? It is not unreasonable to guess that in a 2-week training course, these mall piercists are not being taught about infection control and blood-borne pathogens. A quick wipe with a sterile pad is not effective in removing disease-carrying blood. Some will argue that the piercing gun never comes in contact directly with the customer's skin. This might be true, but the piercers hands do - if they touch the customers skin and then touch the gun, the gun is now contaminated. Period. And when the gun drives the stud through the flesh, if the skin starts to bleed there is no way of knowing whether or not tiny particles of blood could have been dispersed into the air contaminating everything around it. Why the Needle is So Much Better In comparison to the two-week training of the mall piercer, a professional body piercer goes through extensive training that can last as long as two or three years. They learn about the human body and how piercings affect the circulatory system. They learn how to avoid hitting nerves that can cause severe pain to the customer. Most importantly, they learn about cross-contamanation prevention and how to properly sterilize their instruments. Anything that touches the customer that cannot be autoclaved is thrown away immediately. Work stations are fully disinfected before and after every piercing procedure. The piercing process itself is also much safer and less painful than having a blunt stud forced through your skin. A piercing needle is actually hollow and extremely sharp. It slices through the skin, safely pushing the tissue aside to make room for the jewelry to be inserted. That may not sound too appealing, but it is actually a very quick process and the method is virtually painless for most body parts. The jewelry that is used in professional piercing shops is also much better for you. Barbells and Captive Beads Rings are specially designed to allow removal of dirt and bacteria effectively during the healing process. Allowing for full movement of the jewelry makes it much easier for you to clean it without counter-productively pushing more bacteria into the pierce. The metals that are used in this jewelry are also better for your skin and less likely to cause a reaction. High-grade Surgical Stainless Steel and even Titanium (which is virtually nickel-free) give you the best chances of an infection and reaction-free piercing. Although it is true that professional piercing prices run higher than those performed in mall stores, why put a price on your safety and well-being? The quality and personalized service you receive by going to a professional are certainly worth a few extra dollars. These trained professionals are also happy to follow up with you should you have any questions or complications. Your mall piercer might offer their opinion on how to treat an infection, but who do you think will be more qualified to help you? The answer is obvious.

They are inappropriate for any kind of piercing, they can not be sterilized properly, which makes it possible to spread diseases from person to person. The studs used in the guns are dull, they tear through the body tissue, also the studs used are far too short to allow for optimum healing. Using the piercing gun on cartilage can effectively cause a cartilage blow out which is where the cartilage just shatters. All in all they are completely dangerous to be using.

The evidence is well documented. From cracked/shattered cartilledge, hypertrophic scarring, kelloiding, infection, and poor quality metal's leading to dermatitle reactions. The other problem is the people using them. What training is required of them if any? What regulations does the establishment have if any? Are they even inspected? Something needs to be done. Be pro-active not reactive.

As a former piercer I'm am well aware of the harm caused by the guns. They are not able to be properly cleaned. Where as with professional equipment needles are discarded after one use, these tools harbor bacteria on the utensil allowing it to gain access into ones blood stream, spreading what may be dwelling on the tool. The tissue is damaged by the gun, and is often pierced incorrectly leading to keyloids and problems with the healing.
