The Diolkos, the unique paved way of 600 B.C. which enabled ships to be moved overland across the Isthmus of Corinth from sea to sea, is crumbling into the water at its western end.
After the excavation (~1960), great part of the monument was left at the mercy of its position near the Corinth Canal.
Rescue actions continued to be denied even when the erosion had left considerable portions of this registered archaeological site in a state of demolition! Although seemingly wishing the monument's restoration, for years the relevant services of the Greek Ministry of Culture kept themselves totally unprepared to protect Diolkos or even apply for funding!
Having by now at their heels several investigations by Justice and Public Administration Authorities, and after a 2008 BBC coverage, the Ministry has entered in some movimentation. Some partial interventions, in the spring of 2009, still leave the monument with no real guarantee as to its protection AND restoration.(Updated 2 November 2009).
With Diolkos' decay going on, our petition is:
We declare ourselves against the mentalities and practices that lead to the destruction of the world's heritage and we ask the Greek Prime Minister to exercise his authority so that, without any further delays and hypocrisy, the Diolkos is finally saved and restored.

To the Greek Prime Minister
Sir, The ancient diolkos, a unique monument of the end of the 7th century BC that enabled Greek warships and merchantmen to be moved overland across the Isthmus of Corinth from sea to sea, is progressively crumbling into the water at its western end.
We declare ourselves against the mentalities and practices that lead to the destruction of the world's heritage and we ask you to exercise your Authority so that, without any further delays and hypocrisy, the Diolkos is finally saved and restored.
We signed the "Save and Restore Ancient Diolkos" petition!

Having read about the Diolkos in "Early Railways 1" (Newcomen Society), I think it is very sad to see the disregard paid to this ancient civil engineering feat and thus strongly hope that everything possible is done to preserve what's left.
