Urge Congress to Subsidize Passenger Rail!

We the undersigned demand that subsidies be shifted away from airline travel and highway construction in favor of passenger rail. The United States is currently experiencing a financial meltdown as borrowers are finding it difficult to obtain and pay off loans for everything from mortgages to auto loans. The current car-reliant system is impractical for the average American. In addition, our country also needs to dramatically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to comply with upcoming global standards on climate change.
With an equivalent per-passenger fuel use of up to 43mpg, rail is by far the most efficient means of mass transit. This will not only help reduce the United States impact on global warming, but it will empower citizens of our country by eliminating financial and situational barriers to travel. Automobiles are bad for our physical health, our financial security, and our social and mental well-being.
As of 2002, the United States spent over $30 billion on Highway subsidies, whereas Amtrak has received a meager 1.67% of that number. We need to begin shifting our transport base if we hope to encourage a stable, economical and environmentally sound nation for our children.
