In a far-reaching decision that could well be a textbook example of judicial activism, the
U.S. Supreme Court has struck down decades of election finance precedent and opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending on elections.
President Obama denounced the decision as "a major victory for big oil, Wall Street banks, health insurance companies and the other powerful interests that marshal their power every day in Washington to drown out the voices of everyday Americans."
Major corporations in this country post billions of dollars in profit and could easily spend enough money to determine the outcome of an election or influence votes on legislation.

I am deeply disappointed in the Supreme Court's decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. This decision opens the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending on elections. I strongly urge you to support the Fair Elections Now Act (S.752 / H.R.1826).

Our election financing system is already biased toward special interests and against ordinary citizens. Lobbyists help draft legislation to protect corporate profits instead of the public good. Elected officials spend a third of their time trolling for contributions rather than representing their constituents. And billions of taxpayer dollars benefit wealthy corporations in the form of earmarks, subsidies and special regulations.
The Fair Elections Now Act would help address this critical threat to our democracy by matching small citizen campaign contributions with matching funds in sufficient quantity to allow candidates to refuse corporate money. This bill would allow candidates to be beholden to the American people only, and not to wealthy special interests. This bill is modeled after successful programs at the state level across the country.
The Fair Elections Now Act would help restore the American people's faith in our democracy. We the people need to know that our elected representatives are truly representing us, and not working to increase profits for corporate America. Please join this bipartisan effort and support the Fair Elections Now Act.
