Urge UN Human Rights Commission to Condemn Unlawful Killings of Suspected Drug Offenders in the Philippines

  • by: Amelia Meister

In the Philippines this last month hundreds of people were murdered by their government. Their crime: they are suspected drug dealers. These are people with no charges against them with no trial and no verdict. The police are simply killing them in the street.

Not only is death an inappropriate punishment for drug related crime but these people are being denied their rights to due process. Due process is the right to a fair legal process including a fair trial, access to qualified legal representation and the right to appeal the decision.

These illegal murders are an obvious breech of human rights and an appalling method of dealing with drug-related crime. The UN High Commission on Human Rights has the responsibility to openly and actively condemn the Philippines for their actions and insist that the Philippines follow due process when dealing with their citizens.

To Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner of Human Rights,

As a person who is greatly concerned with human rights I call on your to actively and openly condemn the killings of drug-related criminal suspects in the Philippines.

In the last month, murders of suspected drug dealers has increased to over 400 with President Duterte supporting the murders. These people have no charges against them and have been denied due process.

Due process is a human right in order to ensure that people are not unfairly prosecuted. It must be upheld for the human rights of Filipino citizens. As the High Commissioner you are in a position of power to condemn these killings and to urge the Filipino government to enact due process and give their citizens the right to a fair trial, compotent legal representation and the right to appeal.

These needless murders must stop.
