Keep Solid Waste Out Of Groundwater

Unprecedented levels of chemical contaminants in North Carolina's groundwater were recently recorded, and a formal injunction was filed last week against Duke Energy, the corporation responsible for a decade of contaminants.

Legislature in North Carolina has avoided pollution regulation by inventing a distinction between underground water and surface-running rivers. Now coal ash has seeped into the unregulated groundwater, carrying with it cancerous arsenic and new, mind-altering thallium. There’s no excuse to turn a blind eye to this pollutant.

The time is ripe to support the environmental groups who have stood and drawn the line. Recently in South Carolina, the same dodgy coal-storing practices were scrutinized in the courtroom -- and in 2012 the public won out, securing a large settlement for damages with unprecedented federal regulation. The Department of Water Control considers coal ash a solid waste. Help convince NCDENR to keep this waste out of public drinking water.
Dear [Decision-maker],

I am writing to urge you to stop energy companies from dumping toxic coal ash waste into our groundwater. This decade-long practice has taken its toll on our health and has affected the legitimacy of North Carolina's legislature. As a concerned citizen, I urge you to follow the example of the Department of Water Control and deem coal ash a solid waste that needs special handling.

It's the state’s job to adhere to our nation's laws, and this loophole concerning groundwater contamination has been ignored for too long. The toxins present in drinkable groundwater are not only extremely harmful, they are legally considered solid waste, and their presence is unacceptable.

Thank you for standing up for the people's right to clean drinking water.

Sincerely,
