Governor Quinn: Say NO to New Coal and NO to Higher Gas Bills!

  • by: Sierra Club

Leucadia's sweetheart deal is bad for our pocketbook and bad for the environment. Their proposed coal-to-gas plant would pollute Chicago's southeast side. It would be located just two blocks away from Washington High School. The plant would impact more than 10,000 students and the many families who live nearby over the 30-year project life.

But instead of listening to these concerns, the Illinois legislature rammed through a last-minute bill to strip the Illinois Commerce Commision of their power to protect consumers. With the stroke of a pen, Governor Quinn can stand with Illinois consumers against this filthy coal project.

Tell Governor Quinn: VETO SB3766 and SAY NO to new coal and NO to higher gas bills.
Subject: Veto SB3766 -- Leucadia

Dear Governor Pat Quinn,

I am writing to ask you to VETO Senate Bill 3766, which would force NICOR and Ameren to pay for 100% of the costs for Leucadia to build and operate a coal gasification plant in Southeast Chicago.

[Your comments]

SB3766 would unfairly force Illinois consumers to purchase expensive synthetic gas from Leucadia, no matter what the cost. Please ensure that the Illinois Commerce Commission is allowed to properly protect consumers, and VETO SB3766.

A dirty and expensive coal gasification plant is the last thing we need in Illinois. I urge you to VETO SB 3766 with a call for more legislation that will bring renewable energy to Illinois.
