Obama: Stand Up for Gay Americans, Say No to Rick Warren

Target: President-Elect Obama; Parag Mehta, LGBT liasion on Obama-Biden transition team
Sponsored by: Care2
We are deeply disappointed in President-Elect Obama's decision to choose Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the inauguration in January. Pastor Warren is an outspoken opponent of gay and lesbian equality. Pastor Warren's public support for California's Proposition 8 sends a clear message that he believes loving, committed gay and lesbian couples are second-class citizens in America.

Equality for gay and lesbian Americans is a fundamental civil and human rights issue, not a matter of "disagreement" that can be ignored for issues of political expediency. We strongly urge President-Elect Obama to reconsider his decision and choose a faith leader who supports equality for all Americans to deliver the invocation at this historic inauguration.

Dear President-Elect Obama and members of the Obama-Biden transition team:

I am deeply disappointed in your team's decision to choose Pastor Rick Warren to deliver the invocation at the inauguration in January. Pastor Warren is an outspoken opponent of gay and lesbian equality. Through his public support for California's Proposition 8, he sent a clear message that he believes loving, committed, gay and lesbian couples are second-class citizens in America.

President-Elect Obama states that he "disagrees" with Pastor Warren on gay rights issues but that Pastor Warren's selection is a matter of "outreach." I couldn't disagree more. Equality for gay and lesbian Americans is not a simple matter of disagreement; it is a fundamental human and civil rights issue and not something to be glossed over and ignored.

I strongly urge you to reconsider your decision and choose a faith leader who supports equality for all Americans to deliver the invocation at this historic inauguration.

Sincerely,

I believe all people are equal, and should not be discriminated against on the basis of their sexual preference.

Please stop. He has said completely disgusting things, on tv AND in his church, these were not slip-ups, as he had a chance on his tv appearance to retract/downgrade his comments. I am not gay, but i do feel like homosexuals need to be treated as equals in our society. It's the new civil rights struggle.

Being called a pedophile or someone who practices incest is unbelievable and extremely offensive. What is even more offensive is someone whom I supported choosing this person to be part of your inauguration. I feel like I have been slapped in the face by a friend.

I am very against Rick Warren doing anything for your election. I am a lesbian that only in the eyes of God and a few others married to the best woman to ever enter my life. We were put together for reason. It's the 21st Century and it's time someone took a stand for Gays and Lesbians. We should have the sme rights as heterosexuals. How would you all like it if someone told you you couldn't get married or have the same rights as inter-racial couples or white couples? We're human too and deserve to be treated equally.

Please choose a faith leader outside the mainstream of Judeo-Christian-Islamic orthodoxy - like Buddhism, Wiccan, shaman, etc. Why preserve the illusion foisted on us by those three religions that they comprise all there is to spitituality.

My son, Mathieu, is gay and has been in a commited relationship for six years + now. I don't want him or his partner treated as second-class ciitzens. I also have a number of gay friends and would like to see them treated just like everyone else expects to be treated; i.e., fairly and justly. I don't pretend to undertand their orientation, but I do know that it is real. They're wired that way, probably starting in the womb. I would prefer my son were straight, but I accept him for what he cannot help but be. It's a tough enough row to hoe for him and I'm not going to make it any tougher.

This is a sad and disgusting choice... I can't watch the Inaugural being that when they show Warren's face, I will be ill.. This man is against everything "fair and just"... His anti-gay/lesbian/bi-sexual/transgender beliefs are against my faith, for I believe that God wants us to love one another...

Gay and lesbian people continue to support African American people. It is time for all African American people to support gay and lesbian people.

So he is saying 2% of the population has absolutely no right to make their love recognized by the law? 2% of the population isn't good enough to be truly happy? He needs to open his mind.

Because Pastor Warren does not believe in equality for all American citizens and believes that because some uninlightened person 5000 years ago was homophobic, we should still use homophobic laws. I oppose such bigotry!
