Bush/Cheney: Don't Play Politics With Our Wildlife!

Target: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife
The Bush/Cheney Administration's politically-motivated draft "recovery plan" for northern spotted owls threatens to undermine years of progress in protecting these owls and the old-growth forests they need to survive.

Urge officials at the Fish & Wildlife Service to scrap the current plan and reconvene the Northern Spotted Owl Recovery Team to develop a real recovery plan that benefits the spotted owl, not just the timber industry.

There's just a few days left to take action. The Fish & Wildlife Service will only be accepting comments on this draft recovery plan until this Friday, August 24th, so thank you for standing up for the northern spotted owl today.

Read our "fast facts" about northern spotted owls and the draft "recovery plan."

As a supporter of Defenders of Wildlife and someone who cares about scientifically sound wildlife management, I urge you to withdraw the politicized draft recovery plan and reconvene the Northern Spotted Owl Recovery Team to draft a new plan based on scientific findings.

Spotted owl numbers are declining more rapidly than anticipated when the federal government added them to the endangered species list in 1990, and the loss of vital old-growth forest habitat remains one of the biggest threats to the northern spotted owl's recovery.

Dwindling by almost 4% per year, the spotted owl is at risk of declining to the point that the species would need to be "uplisted" from threatened to endangered. Some experts believe that there may be as few as 3,000 pairs left.

Given the continuing stresses and threats to this species, the northern spotted owl needs more old growth forest protection, not less.

I urge you to reconvene the Recovery Team of scientists and other experts from state and federal agencies and local stakeholder groups, to draft a new recovery plan for these beleaguered birds.

We simply can't afford to play politics when it comes to recovering rapidly declining species like the northern spotted owl.

Thank you for considering my views on this matter.

Sincerely,

You must start respecting and listening to the earth and taking the interconnectivity of all species into account. Life is not about money and greed. Whats really important is love and compassion for all.

Please listen to the American people's plea to protect these endangered owls. I am diametrically opposed to deforesting an area which would harm their habitat. Thank you for opening your heart to a group of people and birds that need you to listen now.

Please do allow accelerated and unsustainable logging on federal lands at the expense of the spotted owl and other wildlife that depend on these forests.

Leave old-growth public forests alone--they're a vital asset to our past and future and provide important habitat for wildlife and plants, many of which may become extinct without these forests.
