Project Tammie: Putting an end to Prescription Narcotic Drug Addiction & Abuse

Target: House of Representatives, U.S. Senators & Representatives, Members of Congress
Sponsor: Dottie Whitaker, Project Tammie

Prescription narcotic drug addiction and abuse are out of control in this country. Lives are being ruined and lost every day due to this growing epidemic. Surprisingly more people die from prescription drug overdose than from illegal drugs and three out of five people in rehab are there for prescription drug addiction.

Project Tammie's goal is to change these statistics and save lives by substantially reducing the number of people addicted to (and abusing) prescription narcotic drugs.

This would be done by passing a bill that would implement a nationwide Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) requiring ALL states to participate.

Once this bill is passed and all states have their PMPs in place, practitioners would then be required to run a Prescription Monitoring Report and review it for any signs of abuse BEFORE
prescribing or dispensing narcotic drugs to a patient.

A Prescription Monitoring Program report clearly shows the patient's narcotic drug history, including patient's name, prescribing physician(s), pharmacy(ies), date(s), TYPE(S) OF NARCOTIC(S), strength(s) and quantity(ies). The report is very simple to read; anyone (not just practitioners) could read and understand it. This would put an end to "doctor shopping" for narcotic drugs.

By definition a "narcotic" is an addictive drug that reduces pain, alters mood and behavior, and can induce sleep or stupor. Natural and synthetic narcotics are used in medicine to control pain.

Project Tammie: Putting an end to Prescription Narcotic Drug Addiction & Abuse

Dear Members of Congress,

I am writing to urge you to support Project Tammie and pass a bill requiring ALL states to participate in the Prescription Monitoring Program.

Prescription narcotic drug addiction and abuse are out of control in this country. Lives are being ruined and lost every day due to this growing epidemic. Surprisingly more people die from prescription drug overdose than from illegal drugs and three out of five people in rehab are there for prescription drugs.

By passing a bill that would better manage and monitor prescriptions for NARCOTIC drugs, these statistics will change and lives will be saved.

Under this proposed bill, the following would go into effect:

1. Every state would be required to set up a Prescription Monitoring Program.
(Many states currently have them set up.)

2. Practitioners would be required to run a patient's Prescription Monitoring Report and review it for signs of abuse BEFORE prescribing or dispensing NARCOTICS to a patient.

Please support this life-saving effort and let me know your opinion on this issue.

Sincerely,
